All is Quiet

All is quiet here, we are slowly easing into this new year. Mr. Michie and I just arrived back this afternoon from seeing my family at home for the holidays. It was a wonderful trip. I got to see my sister, who is my best friend and finally meet in person (after many Skype visits) my beautiful new niece. She is sweet beyond words and I am already missing her and all her little giggles and sweet baby smells.

We have a few more days before school starts, so we will spend the weekend unpacking, doing a little reorganizing and just being.

I hope that your new year has gotten off on the right foot for you and that all is well. Jennifer x

Our Day

Mr. Michie and I each went our own ways yesterday to run errands and do a little Christmas shopping before we met up again to see, The Hobbit. It was wonderful, Peter Jackson has done such a fantastic job of tying everything in so far, the links between this and The Lord of the Rings was very nicely done.

While I was getting ready, Mr. Michie snapped this on his phone, I thought it was cute, so I am posting it. I love that he will set up a little scene and take a picture. This is a mini Yoda from a Happy Meal we have had for ages, he is a “magic 8 ball” Yoda and lives in the kitchen:

Our Christmas Cottage

We finished decorating the cottage today, just in time for the first day of Advent. Our wreath is  out and our purple candle lit. We usually don’t decorate this early, I would normally start getting things out by the second week of December, but with all the craziness of school at the moment, I knew if we didn’t do it now, we wouldn’t have the chance to do it.

Mr. Michie said I was like a Christmas Fairy, sprinkling the house with Christmas here and there. I will admit, every room has a bit of Christmas in it, it just has too! I thought I would share a couple of photos we took, while we were decorating.

I hope that you are enjoying today, wherever you may be and that peace is with you as we move into the season of Christmas.

A Turkey Sandwich

My Monday wish came true, I got to eat a turkey sandwich! This year, that is all I truly wanted out of Thanksgiving, was a turkey sandwich and a slice of pumpkin pie. We left work last night in the pouring rain and got soaking wet waiting for the bus, I don’t know if my jacket will ever dry out! We came in, took off our wet clothes, threw on some pj bottoms and sweatshirts and heated up a little spinach and artichoke dip.

We snacked on that and talked about our day, then we worked on making some turkey sandwiches. I sliced the bread while Mr. Michie picked out a Christmas movie. It had been a long day, so we decided to just keep vegging out and stayed on the couch under our quilt to eat our delectable sandwiches made with the Thanksgiving leftovers and watched The Santa Claus. Our evening would not have been complete if we didn’t eat a slice of pumpkin pie with whipped cream of course!

Today was such a long day, I am already ready for the weekend again, crazy isn’t it!

A Peppermint Hot Chocolate

My first Christmas drink of the season, a peppermint hot chocolate from Starbucks. It was the perfect Saturday afternoon treat with Mr. Michie. We ran a few errands and needed a little respite from the cold and rain, the twinkle lights were on, Christmas music was playing, we were together, what could be better?

Pioneer Woman

I am a pioneer woman. All the women in my family are. We travel where our lives take us and we keep the home fires burning. My mother and her mother before that and her mother before that and so on have given me that gift, I am fortunate and I mean this with every ounce of humbleness, I am a good homemaker. I know how to keep a home and how to make a home, they have bestowed that blessing on me.

However, I am lucky in that, I am a modern pioneer woman, I am a pioneer woman with Skype. On this day before Thanksgiving when I can’t be with my family, I am blessed that I can see their beautiful faces.

It is not always easy being apart from them, but I am married now and wherever Mr. Michie is, is HOME. I am so fortunate, that when I packed up my wagon and headed in my case east  vs. the west of wagons ho, I knew that it was not forever, to never ever see my family again. Those were brave women, to leave behind everything they knew, for a new world.

As you pack up your wagons to travel to family and friends this holiday season, I pray that you are well and your journeys safe.

Making Lunch

We try and vary our lunches from week to week. We decided to make pasta salad this week. Now, as Mr. Michie will tell you, I have a thing for packaging. I can’t help it, I have been known to buy something simply for the packaging. I have been staring at this pasta every time I walk down that particular aisle of our local grocery store, today it jumped into my hands.

This box of pasta was so beautiful, I just had to photograph it. In 1927 at the age of 14, Domenico Cocco began learning the art of making pasta. In 1944, he passed on his passion and knowledge to his son Giuseppe who continues to make pasta today in the village of Fara San Martino in Italy.

The taste of it, just on its own with nothing on it was simply wonderful. It tasted more like fresh pasta then dried pasta. I can’t wait to taste it in our lunch tomorrow after it has absorbed the flavors of the tomatoes and olives and mozzarella and olive oil and oregano, I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!

What A Day!

I love this little picture. I found it awhile ago, I am ashamed to say, I don’t remember where, and the caption underneath it said, “Sometimes life is tough and that’s ok!”

What a day this has been! I feel like this miniature bunny, I need to be on my couch, with a soothing eye mask and recovering from the hectic pace of my school day.

We had our first Art Show of the season tonight. One of the students cut her finger pretty deeply while trying to trim her work to be mounted, so off we went to see the school nurse and then off she went to the ER.

That was the only major drama for today. We hung the show in a day, piecing it together as more work trickled in. It finally came together in the end as it always does, I don’t panic, because I know that it will be alright.

Mr. Michie took care of me and brought me a banana and a bottle of water for lunch to make sure I ate. I don’t worry about eating on days like this, our time is too precious in setting up the show to waste any of it, as I am working to a deadline, but, I appreciated him looking after me and my banana was a welcome gift.

We had a wonderful turn out and a lot of nice work. Now I am home, lying next to Mr. Michie on our bed, the hum of the radiators is the only noise besides my typing away and we are pooped! There is a comfort in the silence.

Tomorrow is Friday and I am so glad I made it through this week!

Mint Bubbly

I drive Mr. Michie crazy with how I eat a bar of chocolate. I am a grazer, a savourer. I take my time, I eat a bit here a bit there, I have been known to still have Easter candy in June.

This candy bar is like eating a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie! It is scrumptious and a little corner of this broken off, is the perfect dessert. Just a taste, that is all I need.

Roasted Butternut Squash Chili

Mr. Michie and I love to cook with each other. We get caught in a rut at times, not so much in that we aren’t sure what to make, but we go through phases and can’t seem to get enough of a certain thing, for instance a variety of different salads, or soup with different homemade bread recipes we will try. We like trying new things. We were on a guacamole kick during our 1/2 term break and decided to do just that: try something new.

I read Jenny Steffens Hobick blog and she posted the recipes that she made during a recent cooking event that she hosted. One of them was a Roasted Butternut Squash Chili.

It looked and sounded delicious. We decided to try it! As always, it must be the Italian in me, but I made a few moderate changes, I added a whole red pepper, a few more spices, I also completely forgot about the bay leaves and never added them.

It bubbled and stewed away on the stove for hours, filling the house with the most heavenly homey scent. Mr. Michie made his famous guacamole, we piled the chili in bowls, dotted it with mounds of cheese, guacamole and sour cream.

We ceremoniously sat on the couch, with a bowl of tortilla chips, a couple of beers and pressed “play” on It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

It was a very nice evening.
