Born Again

I came home tonight and as I headed upstairs I could hear someone playing their car stereo really really loudly outside.

I took a peak as I closed the curtains and saw it was a construction worker sitting in his van waiting on his mate. He was in his early 30’s, bald with some facial hair, and glasses. In fact, he looked a little like Walt from Breaking Bad.

His eyes were closed, his head was swaying, he was biting his lower lip, his right hand was raised in a small fist and he was beating the air. What was his listening to you ask? Was it a good 80’s rock ballad? Some heavy metal? Some old Rock’n’Roll? No, he was listening to the 1979 classic, I’m Born Again. He made me think of this guy. I’ll tell you, people never cease to surprise me. Never judge a book by its cover, for music speaks to your soul, not to your age.

Happy Friday!

The Washing Machine Blues

Whirlpool Surgomatic Washing Machine Ad

I’ve got the blues, the washing machine blues that is! Our machine stopped working last weekend, and a repairman came this week and he “thought” he fixed it. However, after my first load of laundry in 6 days was done yesterday we realized he didn’t fix it, so unlike the lady above, I am not really smiling.

We had wet clothes hanging in every available doorway and on every available space. Looks like a trip to the old laundromat for us this weekend! Because “Mount Laundry” is getting bigger by the day!

Happy Epiphany

Happy Epiphany to you all. Our “Little Christmas” gift this year was that we survived Winter Storm Ion. We made it home to London, it only took us 4 days to do it!

But, we looked at our situation as a mini adventure. We stayed in a nice hotel in the Rosemont district of Chicago, ordered delicious deep dish pizza after midnight as we hadn’t eaten since lunch. I had the joy of getting a migraine earlier in the day and finally had to grace the airport bathroom with my presence by getting sick, so I was more than ready to eat a little something. We hung out, watched some TV, watched the snow from our window. We were together, so we were happy.

So, that is why my space has been radio silent the past few days. But, I have so much to share with you and a few pictures too. Not as many as usual as I was so caught up having FUN, I didn’t take as many as I would have liked!

I hope that your New Year has started out quietly and merrily and that you have been able to ease into this first month with a calmness and a peace about your spirit.

Making Plans

Jayne Mansfield Christmas Tree

Well, for one reason or another this week has gotten away from me. I did take down all my Fall decorations, but they are waiting to be put into the attic and my Christmas things are waiting to be taken down. So tonight, when I get in from work, I plan to dust and vacuum and get everything in order for Saturday morning.

I have decorating to complete this weekend, and a toy to finish sewing and a few more to make, I have Christmas cards I need to start writing and a package to get ready to mail to someone special. And, in all of this I want to make sure that I take a bit of time to breath, because I haven’t been able to do that this week.

Here’s to the weekend! For with it comes the glow of twinkle lights from our soon to be festive holiday cottage!

P.S. Happy St. Nicholas Day! I hope you were good and he left a little surprise in your shoe!

One of Those Days

It was one of those days today. I didn’t feel so great last night because my sinuses have been bothering me and ended up getting sick. Mr. Michie made me a cup of tea and we just sat on the couch in silence, like zombies after our long day, holding hands and listening to music. We finally went to bed not long before midnight, but I got woken up at 3:21am to be exact by a huge downpour that didn’t let up for quite awhile. I didn’t mind, it was nice to just listen to the rain and Mr. Michie breath and watch the patterns that were reflected onto the ceiling.

This morning, I got up even earlier than normal and rushed to get ready so I could get a broccoli and cheese soup started in our crockpot, Mr. Michie helped me with measuring out the ingredients and I left with high hopes. I even ran to the grocery store on my lunch break to get some nice crusty bread to go with dinner. It was a recipe I had found online and it had gotten really rave reviews, well, I wish I could tell that lady where she could stick her crockpot because that soup was nowhere near the picture.

Yes, yes, I know I was deceived by a picture, what a fool. I think she opened up a can of cream of broccoli soup and took a picture of that, because there was nothing creamy about this soup! I was at work late and had to fight with people to get on the tube and the train, something I despise doing, but I had a loaf of crusty bread and I was going home to finish off the soup before Mr. Michie got in and light our candles and turn on some music, so he had a nice atmosphere to come home too.

Well, I opened the door and our house smelled like a boy’s locker room, with really really stinky socks. That soup was so watery, it wouldn’t have even been served to Oliver Twist. I hate days like this, days where you were planning on something and then it just didn’t work out like you had expected. I know that is life, but after a very, very long day I just wanted coming home to be simple. Oh, well! That is one crockpot meal I won’t make again. Our first bad one! So, we ordered Chinese food. C’est la vie!

Here’s to tomorrow, for it is Wednesday and we are almost at the weekend!

Heading Toward Autumn

We had a wonderful, wonderful weekend this past weekend. We got to spend Sunday with friends who came all the way from Colorado! It was a miracle they made it out!

They are on a little traveling adventure and spent some of their very valuable time with us. We were simply thrilled! The world is a better place with kindred spirits in it. My girlfriend even brought me a few surprises, one of them being the lovely Susan Branch’s new book:

A Fine Romance Susan Branch

Oh! Happiness is!

The weather has taken a definite turn toward Autumn this past weekend and when I left the house yesterday morning to head to the train station it was a brisk 45 F!

The sunlight is changing too. While working in the main studio I noticed that the shadows were different. The room felt cooler with the light not streaming through as strongly as it had been a week before. It made me think of Wyeth, I think he would have liked painting in the main studio yesterday!

Cranberries, 1966

Last night we feasted on grilled cheese and tomato soup. I picked up a can of soup on my way home. I’m a Campbell’s girl and they had limited edition Andy Warhol’s “Soup Cans” as their design, so of course, that is what jumped into my basket. I think the soup even tasted better because it looked like an Andy Warhol can! Cute!

South of Broad

Pat Conroy South of Broad

I have spent the past two days doing a major cleaning overhaul in the cottage. I have gutted my closets and have bags of items to donate to the charity shop as well as a few pieces that are going to become cleaning rags. I have gone through the cabinet under the sink in the bathroom, you know which cabinet I’m talking about, the one that all bathroom things somehow get relegated too and they quietly build up into a dusty mess. I have also revamped the den, putting a few Fall things out, even though we are still in the hot throws of Summer and today I am going to change around the kitchen.

I don’ have a picture to share with you today, what I wanted to share with you was a book. I love reading! I need to read, it satisfies my soul. I have mentioned before that my Mom and I trade books. She gave me a Pat Conroy novel she had finished reading and I have had it sitting on my ever growing book pile since Easter. I dove into it in July and furiously read it on the plane ride home. It was immense. It was called South of Broad.

The book focuses on the life of Leo King and the friends he makes while a teenager in Charleston, South Carolina. The story grows and gives roots to these characters who stay a part of each other’s lives, even as they grow older. The description that Conroy gives of Charleston, left me breathless at times. I felt as if I too was riding my bike through the main character’s (Leo King) newspaper route. I know those roads like the back of my hand. Charleston has long been in my blood and for many years it was my home. I could close my eye and follow his route in my head, seeing the streets and homes I would pass.

As I read, I drank in his words like a cool mint julep flowing over my lips. The bite of bourbon, the sweetness of the sugar and the refreshing taste of the mint all mingling together on your tongue before you swallow. I savoured Conroy’s use of the English vernacular, I savoured his use of the Southern vernacular. He wrote about home between those pages, the smell of the tide coming in and the pluff mud as only a Charlestonian would know it. He wrote life between those pages.

His words as majestic as the full moon rising over the incoming tide in the Ashley River, as heavenly as sweet tea and hot buttered biscuits on your tongue. The taste of the dough and butter oozing over your palette as sacred a ritual as taking communion.

I felt as if I knew the friends between those pages, that I had somehow become part of their story, peering through their windows as I walked along the Battery. This book was a truly scrumptious read, from teenage life into adulthood, the friends we meet along the way who change us, as we change them, and a book about life and the paths we all take, whether the crossing of one’s path to another’s, betters it, destroys it, or enriches it.

“What’s important is that a story changes every time you say it out loud. When you put it on paper, it can never change. But the more times you tell it, the more changes will occur. A story is a living thing; it moves and shifts” – Pat Conroy, South of Broad

Eddie’s Steak Shed

Jennifer Michie Steak ShedMy family loves cool and unusual places. Last night, my parent’s took me to a very unique place. We went to Eddie’s Steak Shed. This place has A LOT of character. The sign is reminiscent of the 1960’s, with great  personality, the place you go to for a good steak and a liquor drink and if it was the 1960s a Mad Men cigarette, I could see Don Draper coming here!

Their road sign is graced with a blue bull, but it reminded me more of Paul Bunyan’s Ox and the size of the steaks reminded me of the “Old 96’er” that John Candy eats in The Great Outdoors. Between all of us last night we might have eaten a mini cow, but it was delicious!

So, if you are ever passing through Granger, Indiana, I would head toward the Shed, because it is an experience not to be missed.

P.S. I am winging my way back across the great pond today, so I might be radio silent for a few days while I get back into my England groove of things. I wish that my time here would just go on forever, because being with my family, makes me more than happy.

The Last Day of July

Jennifer Michie Maisy Keeping GuardWhere has July gone? I spent yesterday tootling around with my Mom, it was GREAT!

We had breakfast with Maisy, while she kept guard over us. Met my Dad for lunch and stopped by Carmela’s Bakery on our way home for some delicious sweet treats! MMMM! I won’t tell you how many cookies are actually still left in the box, because that would be giving away too many secrets!
