The First of the Month

Smile Katie Daisy

A pot roast is slowly cooking away in the crock pot this morning. Butter is softening for chocolate chip cookies. We had heart shaped crumpets and a strawberry and yellow plum fruit salad with vanilla sugar for breakfast. Laundry is whirring away in the machine and the wind is making the windows rattle. We are moving slowly, quietly. Snow was supposed to come in the wee hours of the morning, but it didn’t materialize. I don’t think I will ever get my snow day.

I can’t believe that today is the 1st of February! How did we get here? What happened to January? I still haven’t told you about Copenhagen, it’s still on my To-Do list, I’ll get there I promise! Work, just seems to be always in the way.

Today we are going to try and work on organising a few things, in between baking cookies and Mr. Michie grading papers and doing some school related jobs. There are piles everywhere it seems and I feel it is important for our home to be an oasis from the outside world. I don’t always feel I can relax with piles jumping out at me.

I’m also going to mentally prepare for the onslaught of the week. I’m tired of rude people on trains and tubes and platforms and streets. Why can’t everyone just be polite? Kindness is not a lot to ask for. Manners are not a lot to ask for. Manners will get you far in life, don’t ever think they won’t! Just be NICE!

I hope you are having a lovely Sunday, wherever you may be today.

It’s Only Tuesday

Vintage Photo 1964

Well, yesterday I never managed to catch my breath, today felt the same. I’m running on my little hamster wheel and I’m trying to make a leap for freedom.

Mr. Michie texted me this morning to ask if I put the shirt he wore last night to his meeting in the washing machine. I replied with a yes, only to learn he left a pen in his pocket and that was the one shirt, I forgot to check this morning in my bleary-eyed state of doing laundry at 6am. Well, the laundry gods were smiling on us, as it didn’t ruin anything and now Mr. Michie has a very clean pen.

The weeks seem to be getting longer at the moment and the weekends are getting shorter. And it’s only Tuesday. How can that be? So much happened yesterday I was sure when I got up this morning that we were farther along in the week.

Oh, well. Onwards and upwards, right? Right!

Cleaning House

Jennifer Michie Red House

We spent a part of our weekend cleaning out our bedroom. I know, I know, it’s the old January organizing cliche, but I love cleaning house. We went through the closets, the jumbo sweater and blanket bags and the storage bags underneath our bed which we managed to downsize the sheets and towels that we need to one bag. By the time we were done, we had a giant box, two XL paper bags and two garbage bags worth of items to take to the charity shop.

We are really working on downsizing. It is wonderful! I find it very therapeutic and mentally cleansing. It’s funny, because the things we got rid of you can’t really see, they are behind doors, but yet when we came back in the house, Mr. Michie said it just felt “lighter” in the cottage, and it did.

I love when we declutter and organise. Little by little we have been doing this in the cottage, choosing one area to tackle and working through it. It means our house only has what we need. Everything has a purpose.

The Weekend

I haven’t disappeared completely. This week has been insanely busy and with my computer on the fritz, it isn’t as easy to post as it normally is. But, I’ll get there slowly and surely. We’ve spent our weekend cleaning, organising and running a few errands. Mr. Michie met me after work on Friday and we headed to one of our favourite places, Wahaca. I had the chicken enchiladas with a creamy tomatillo sauce, it was delicioso!

We’ve walked, drunk copious amounts of tea, ate freshly made banana bread (no point in letting overripe bananas go to waste!). Watched holiday movies and feasted on hot chocolate for breakfast before going grocery shopping.

It has been such a nice weekend, I’ll be sad to see it come to an end.

A Bend in the Road

This is Glamorous Road Image

I’ve found it harder and harder to come to this little space of mine this week. I had many things to share, but as the week wore on, it took me right along with it. We had many plans for this weekend, but it turned in to a quiet one instead. A weekend to recuperate from the week that was.

The sunshine was out and about today, but the air was cool. The shadows are changing, the sun sunk a little sooner into the evening. We are coming to a bend in the road, we haven’t quite got there yet, but you can feel it’s approach. Summer is starting to lose her grip and we are slowly slipping from one season in to the next.

Pumpkin weather is coming and I’m ready for it!

Listening in the Quiet

Wildflowers

I’ve done a lot of listening these past few days. School is over, no children about, so all is quiet. I have systematically been going through the studios, cleaning up, cleaning out and re-organizing. Through this process I have been plugged in, catching up on podcasts, listening to music, or simply working in silence, very aware of my surroundings.

I have also been using my cleaning time to meditate, focusing on some of my yogi practices. I am finding my quiet at work, now I am looking forward to being able to find it at home. The last few weeks of school always keep our house in a state of flux. It needs a thorough cleaning, more than the spit and polish it has been getting. As long as my kitchen is clean and my bathroom is clean, I can deal with anything else. But I am ready for everything to be in it’s place.

I shall have a few days to myself soon and I plan to work through the cottage, like I am working through the studios, systematically, carefully, with love and listening in the quiet.

Re-Organizing

Plastic Couch Cover

We have spent the weekend doing a spot of spring cleaning. The cottage isn’t quite finished, but we have made a big dent. There is something so satisfying about cleaning up, cleaning out and getting rid of things. However, I always feel the same way, once I work on truly cleaning a space, I almost can’t bring myself to use that area or make a mess in it where it has just been thoroughly gutted and cleaned. I’m not quite to the point of plastic couch covers, a house is supposed to be enjoyed after all, but it is nice to see the space you worked so hard to clean and organize stay that way, at least for five minutes.

We made three runs to the charity shop yesterday and will have more to make next weekend as we have gotten rid of more books, cds, dvds and other odds and ends. Some corners of the cottage look a bit bare now and I actually like it. We are just working on sections; one at a time. We picked what we wanted to focus on and then worked through that. That way the task isn’t as daunting and we stay on course. Streamlining is a good thing, every now and then!

Biscuits

Jennifer Michie Biscuits

Nothing better than fresh biscuits and strawberry jam for breakfast! I made the lovely Carrie of Callie’s Biscuits, Buttermilk Biscuit recipe! The only thing that would have made them better would have been to enjoy them with a glass of iced tea on my own Charleston porch.

Happiness is…

I’ve included Carrie’s biscuit recipe below:

Callie’s Classic Buttermilk Biscuits

This is the recipe that started it all. Sitting in my mother’s kitchen and watching her prepare the pans of these highly sought-after, melt-in-your mouth bites of goodness for her catering business gave me the lightning bolt of inspiration for Callie’s Charleston Biscuits. It took some convincing to persuade my mother that a biscuit business was a good idea. She was under the impression that people still made their own biscuits! Once I convinced her that the art of biscuit making was far from a daily ritual for most, she warmed to the idea. I don’t think she ever dreamed that in a few short years, we’d be making 110,000 biscuits a month and I’d be featured on The Martha Stewart Show.

The beauty of this recipe is that biscuit making can be part of your family tradition. Just save it for a day when a little bit of a mess in the kitchen won’t derail the rest of your plans, because this dough is wet and sticky. If the dough gobs between your fingers with the consistency of pluff mud (what we in the South call marsh mud), don’t worry! That’s a good sign! Getting my hands dirty is part of the fun for me, but if you are a little more averse to gooey hands, you can certainly use a rubber spatula to mix the dough.

Makes about 10 (2-inch) biscuits

  • 2 cups self-rising flour (White Lily preferred), plus more for dusting
  • 5 tablespoons butter: 4 tablespoons cut in small cubes, at room temperature, and 1 tablespoon melted
  • ¼ cup cream cheese, at room temperature
  • ¾ cup whole buttermilk (may substitute low-fat buttermilk)

1.      Preheat the oven to 500°F. Make sure the oven rack is in the middle position.
2.      Measure the flour into a large bowl. Incorporate the cubed butter, then the cream cheese into the flour, using your fingers to “cut in” the butter and cheese until the mixture resembles cottage cheese. It will be chunky with some loose flour.
3.      Make a well in the center. Pour in the buttermilk and, using your hands or a small rubber spatula, mix the flour into the buttermilk. The dough will be wet and messy.
4.      Sprinkle flour on top of the dough. Run a rubber spatula around the inside of the bowl, creating a separation between the dough and the bowl. Sprinkle a bit more flour in this crease.
5.      Flour a work surface or flexible baking mat very well. With force, dump the dough from the bowl onto the surface. Flour the top of the dough and the rolling pin. Roll out the dough to ½-inch thickness into an oval shape. (No kneading is necessary—the less you mess with the dough, the better.)
6.      Flour a 2-inch round metal biscuit cutter or biscuit glass. Start from the edge of the rolled-out dough and cut straight through the dough with the cutter, trying to maximize the number of biscuits cut from this first roll out. Roll out the excess dough after the biscuits are cut and cut more biscuits. As long as the dough stays wet inside, you can use as much flour on the outside as you need to handle the dough. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet with sides lined with parchment paper, or in a cast-iron skillet, or a baking pan with the biscuit sides touching. (It does not matter what size pan or skillet you use as long as the pan has a lip or sides and the biscuits are touching. If you are using a cast iron skillet, no parchment paper is necessary.) Brush the tops with the melted butter.
7.      Place the pan in the oven and immediately reduce the temperature to 450°F. Bake 16 to18 minutes, until light brown on top (or as dark as you prefer), rotating the pan once while baking.

Note: You can freeze any leftover biscuits. To reheat, do not defrost. Wrap the biscuits in foil. Bake in a 400°F oven 25 to 30 minutes. Open the top of the foil for the last 3 to 5 minutes to brown a little on top.

{Please Note:  The recipe listed above is copyright to Callie’s Biscuits. I have eaten her biscuits at a number of events I have attended when at home in the South and was enraptured with their heavenly flavour and as any good Southerner knows, biscuits are a hot topic (no pun intended!), everyone has their favorite recipe and some are a closely guarded secret. I have a few favorites of my own and this is definitely in my list! This recipe was originally posted on the Design Sponge Blog}

It Must Be Monday!

Anne Taintor PTA

Today, was one of those days. You know the kind of day I’m talking about! One of those days where you would be better served going back to bed and waiting till tomorrow to crawl back out.

Cons:

  • I sliced my finger pretty deeply this morning while taking out the recycling and it bled a lot!
  • I pulled a muscle in my shoulder blade yesterday, doing of all things, cleaning the house, and I am pretty sore.
  • Our kitchen was invaded by ants last night. So this morning we waged a war against them, while trying to throw dinner together in the crock pot, iron clothes and run around getting ready for work, all of this happened before 6am.

Pros:

  • For a few fleeting moments, I watched a flock of geese munch alongside a soft headed cow on grass that was sugared with frost
  • The sunrise was a glorious peachy pink color that filled the sky like a delicate blossom about to bud open and I watched the golden orb that the sun is slowly rise above London as my train traveled.
  • Mr. Michie was waiting for me when I got home, with the sweetest smile. He had finished cleaning the house for me! Oh, how I love that red-headed man of mine!

Well, tomorrow is another day as Anne Shirley says, with no mistakes in it yet!
