What a Week!

Going Away Party 1950 itsbetterthanbad

Well, we made it! And what a week it has been! I am looking forward to 1/2 term break next week. A whole week just to ourselves! I have a few things on the agenda, but just resting is one of them, as both of us are fighting off colds. It isn’t easy to stay well at the moment, especially when it is almost the end of May and there is snow predicted for this evening, or at the very least slushy rain (so the weatherman says)!

My little heater is on next to me as I type, as I am trying to keep warm, but I am not sure how much of a difference it is making, it all feels very Dickensian.

There are a few new recipes I want to try next week, one being an Italian Cream Cake for our wedding anniversary. At the moment we are thinking that a romantic quiet night in, sounds like a prefect way to celebrate our anniversary, with good Italian food, wine, music and dessert!

In the mean time we just have to survive Friday. So, here’s to the weekend and long may it last!

Our Weekend

We had a really fun weekend this weekend. We worked hard and we played hard. We tried a new recipe on Friday. I read the wonderful Katie at the Kichen Door blog and she featured this recipe on butter-roasted cinnamon chicken:

We really enjoyed it, but there are a few changes we would make, a bit more cinnamon to make it a little warmer and I thought about adding either some golden raisins or some chopped dried apricots or both to make it a bit more moorish!

The crunch of the almonds was a nice addition to the softness of the chicken and the wheat.

Saturday after running a few errands we went on a date! Mr. Michie took me to see Les Miserables. I saw it last year for the first time on the stage with my theatre buddy. It was wonderful. We both truly enjoyed it. Then, he took me on a date to one of our favourite little Irish pubs.

Mr. Michie had the sausage and mash:

and I had the steak and guinness pie:

Happiness!

Sunday morning it was freezing. I got a hot chocolate before we went grocery shopping:

After shopping and some brunch, we put on our work clothes and got to it. We cleaned our attic. That might not sound like a big deal, but for two people, we have a lot of stuff. It was really just more boxes up there then anything else. Well, that and all of our Christmas things. I have so much Christmas stuff, that Mr. Michie says one day the ceilings will fall down because of it and we will be covered in Christmas!

My coat got caught in the door and the button broke and since I had already used my spare, it was a trip to the haberdashery for more. I chose these and spent a bit of the early evening sewing them on. I like them, they give my coat a more vintage appearance.

For dinner we used the pizza dough recipe again from Annie’s Eats and made her Chicken Ranch Pizza, but put a few more veggies on it. It was delicious. We feasted on the couch and finally got caught up on the first season of Once! Now, I can’t wait to start the second!

For dessert it was hot chocolate and junior mints (a gift from my mom), a little Sunday night treat. This morning the snow didn’t come quickly enough, so off to school we go. I am still doing my snow dance, I hope to have just one snow day this term, they are so much fun.

Breathe

Yesterday was a long day. Today has not started off so well either.. Everyone seems to be in a bad mood, me included! I must have just woken up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

I went out this week and I knew from the moment I got in their car that it was a bad idea. The person I was with was in a bad mood, very standoffish all through evening, argued with others around us, including me. It was meant to be a night of fun, however, I was so happy when the evening was over with, as it was not enjoyable at all. You want to be around people who uplift you not bring you down. I was looking forward to this night and came home feeling deflated.

This morning the bus driver was grumpy and rude, even after I smiled and said, “Good Morning!”, he had words with another passenger, for no reason and she being annoyed with him carried on the verbal disagreement. For what purpose? Why can’t we all try to get along, to just be friendly. Saying “Good Morning, “, “Good Afternoon”, “THANK YOU”, “PLEASE”, are all cheap, they don’t cost a thing! Having manners counts for something in my book, just being generally polite counts for something and doesn’t it make you feel better to be NICE as opposed to GRINCHY?

I think I need to catch my breath, and just try and be for a little while. The very thought that it is Friday and once I get home this afternoon, I am own my own clock for the next little bit, is making me feel better already.

The Pace of Life

The pace of life. You don’t always hear it that often, but once in awhile, someone tells you they are changing their pace of life, they are quitting work, to travel, or working from home, or working less, or having a family, or going to enjoy spending time with their family, or simply enjoy small pleasures, like dancing barefoot around their house.

Today, I was up first and showered and while Mr. Michie finished getting ready, I ran out to get us coffee instead of making it this morning. It was still dark outside, the glow from the coffee shop was a warm welcome, the door was open, beckoning you inside and the aroma of coffee beans permeated the air and my nostrils.

One of the Brandenburg Concertos was playing when I walked in. The mood was right, the atmosphere was calming and I should have been sitting there savoring the moment, instead, I was agitated, I could only think about how much time I had left before I had to get to work, tick, tick, tick, what my morning would entail, what I needed to get done, what I can’t plan for, because there are always last minute requests, tick, tick, tick,  in my head I was becoming impatient, I thought, “make the coffee already!”, tick, tick, tick.

Then, I stepped back, I took a deep breath, what pace of life am I trying to keep to? At work, it is for the most part, constant, there is a rare moment to catch your breath, there are high expectations on staff and students, as there should be, but not always enough time to have a minute or two to call your own during the day. I should have been savoring those 15 minutes while I was standing in the coffee shop as my own, but instead I wasn’t.

I need to become better at that, I need to become better at catching my breath during the week, of not thinking so much about work, till I actually get to work, not an easy task, but I am going to work at it. I want to enjoy my own time, as my own, with my own thoughts. I want to change the pace of things.

Finished!

Finished! Today, I finished a project for work that has eaten up a lot of my free time at work and personally. It is for our upcoming Art trip. I normally create a giant map with a variety of information on it for the students to use when we are away.

This year, however, we decided to try something different, I created a booklet, that will outline our itinerary and the tasks that the students will have to complete when visiting exhibitions, museums and galleries.

That way, it is clearly written down, concise and no one has to try and tell 50+ students what they need to specifically be looking at when we enter a museum while the city is bustling all around us and you are trying to shout over the noise of traffic.

It is a big undertaking each year, but one that I enjoy. I get to be creative; creative in a school way, I mean. But, I am always glad when it is done, I get to breath again.

So, here’s to finished projects, to Tuesday being over, because that means tomorrow is Wednesday and we are that much closer to the weekend and here’s to the start of pumpkin season!

I took a Chance

I took a chance today. I rehung my sign and my older kids came through for me. They wanted to know what it meant, “take a chance on what?”, they asked. “On anything”, I replied, “on life, on school, on art, on love, a chance to be brave, a chance for a fresh start, whatever take a chance means to you!”

They took a tab. They wanted to figure out the meaning, they were questioning, they were thinking, they left with smiles and seemed inspired. And, that is all that matters to me. The boys came back again at lunch and ripped off the tabs that were left, but that’s okay, someone got it, someone understood, someone was put into a position where they had to think and that is what I was after.

Take One

Awhile ago, I saw a sign “pinned” on Pinterest and tucked it away in the back of my mind. This being the 2nd full week of school since our Summer Vacation, I thought I would try it out. I quickly whipped up a sign on Photoshop and printed it out when I got to work.

I liked it. I liked the idea of it. I tore one of the tabs off to get it going and then stuck it to my door. I had some things to do around school at lunch and after returning to my room, I saw a few boys hanging around. I realized later they were hanging around because they had ripped all but one little tab off of my sign.

I suppose, I should have known better, I should have known that the so-called “naughty” kids would do this. But, I refuse to give in to that mentality. I treat all the students the way I wish to be treated. I have made it clear, no matter what happens outside of my room, when you cross my threshold you have a a clean slate with me, until you do something to me.

These so-called “naughty” boys are students I have always treated with respect. I don’t know why it annoyed me so, but seeing all my little tabs torn away, because they were having a laugh, just deflated me. The days seem to be getting longer, so much happened yesterday that this morning it was hard to believe that it was only Tuesday today. ONLY TUESDAY!

It is silly I know to let something so trivial bother me, I think it is just my mood today. I took a chance, I hoped for better. If, one of them, just one of them, got the message, then that is all that really matters, isn’t it? I’ll just keep telling myself that for a little while longer.

I seem to be spinning in all directions at the moment as many of us are. There is always a point in my day when I long for solitude, for 5 minutes that I can call my own. Last night, that solitude came with Mr. Michie. We heated up some Mexican leftovers we had made at the weekend and he made a fresh batch of guacamole. It was the best guacamole I have ever eaten! I couldn’t stop eating it! I am looking forward to my evening, to cooking, to laughing, to recounting the day to one another and simply crashing onto the couch together to just be.

MMMM! Mr. Michie is a GREAT guacamole maker!

More Cowbell!!

What a week! I am so happy that it is Friday, this is a solid gold, gotta have more cowbell kind of Friday.

Don’t Fear the Reaper, is my favorite Blue Oyster Cult song. There is a memory there, it always makes me smile. It reminds me of growing up, discovering your parent’s “music” (not that my parent’s have that, they are always “up” on everything) and a certain road trip.

Thank goodness we have the weekend to just be, to give it more cowbell, all the cowbell we’ve got and prepare for the craziness that next week will bring.

In case, you have no idea what I am talking about:

Have a great weeeeekend!

A Heartfelt Thanks

THANK  YOU

I just wanted to extend a heartfelt thank you to you all for your kind words to me on my blog and through Twitter. I try not to use my blog as a forum for rants, but I was more than fired up over the loss of my wallet!

I truly appreciate your outpouring of support. Do not worry, I have not lost faith. How could I, when I have already been shown such kindness from people I have never met?

Stay tuned! I will be revealing my secret project soon!

Jennifer x

**Update: People’s kindness continue to flow. This morning (1-28-2011), I had a colleague bring me a wallet that she received for Christmas and wasn’t using. “Just something to get me through for awhile,” she said! Now, how kind is that!

Losing my Faith

It is not often that I use my blog as my personal forum to have a rant about things going on, in or around my life. But, excuse me today while I step upon my soapbox. I planned to reveal my secret project yesterday, but when I came home, I was deflated. I felt like an old balloon, that was just barely floating above the floor, the ribbon tail all twisted up beneath it.

Why was I so deflated you ask? Well, I had my wallet stolen out of my handbag at school. Which was in a locked equipment cupboard in my room, but since so many people come and go and do not always remember to lock the door behind them on my personal belongings, someone else saw this as their opportunity.

They must have been very determined, because my current bag of choice at the moment, is a gorgeous Lucky bag that my parents gave me and it is a giant bucket bag and very very Mary Poppins-ish deep, and that was all zipped up and twisted into another bag, so someone really worked hard to get my wallet out.

They walked away with my wallet, about £20 and my bank cards, which thankfully have now been cancelled and had not been used. But, more than the £20 or the pieces of plastic or my favourite green and polka dotted Cath Kidston wallet, bought for me by Mr. Michie, they walked away with my faith in humanity.

I am a girl raised in the South, I was raised by very compassionate parents, with extremely gracious manners. I always make a point of saying “hello” to people I see as I go about my day. I smile. I work my hardest to help people out, I give them respect, it doesn’t matter what others think of you, until you do something to upset me, you have a clean slate in my cupboard. Which is not what was shown to me yesterday.

Today as people came in and out, I watched them like a hawk, I questioned them in my head. I again questioned the turn of events yesterday. I am not an attention seeker, but I did feel it wise to make this known to others, since culprits like to boast, something might be heard through the grapevine.

I was hurt, that after sending out an “All Staff” e-mail, to make people aware, some gave me their sincere apologies, while others who spoke to me just shrugged, because they are complacent and so I am expected to be as well. Well, I refuse to be, a little of my faith in humanity was robbed from me yesterday afternoon and I will not be complacent about that. I will fight to get that back, with every bone in my body.

For, I believe there is good, more good than evil, I will walk in to school tomorrow, I will hide my hurt and I will carry on, a little wiser, a little older and I will continue to seek out the good in people, because surely it is there to be had.
