Bonjour!

I was getting caught up with my Google Reader account yesterday and seeing this made me smile.

A mini “Bonjour! “marquee sign. Wouldn’t it be cute to do a little Christmas version? I think I just might do it!

Tutorial from Oh Happy Day

A Pink Llama

This weekend we ran errands, tried to stay dry, worked, cleaned the house, hung out together, ate good food, went on a date to see Spiderman and I put the finishing touches on these:

She is just one of the little llamas that are going to come together to make an extra special present for someone…

Sunday Tea

The rain is coming and going today. The sunshine has come out to play for a little while, but the breeze in the air has kept everything quite cool in our little neck of the woods. So, I have been sitting on the couch, cross-legged with a quilt over my legs and a sweater on.

I have been working away on a small project. I am putting the final touches on an invite for a party that will be held for someone very special. I might give you a sneak peek soon, but I don’t want the surprise to be ruined for the party girl!

Mr. Michie made me a wonderful cup of tea to keep up my creative strength! Nothing better than a Sunday cup of tea with your honey next to you on the couch!

I think the tea tastes even better, because not only was it made by him, but it was served in a cup that I got when I was antiquing with my Mom in a store in Wexford, PA. What a little treasure trove that spot is! My Mom and I love finding places like that, hidden gems!

W.I.P.

A miniature inchworm that is a “work in progress” in one of my many little ongoing projects this week.

This little worm, will be going to someone very special!

Spring Cleaning

I have spent the past two days doing some major “Spring” cleaning in the house. The jobs I have been doing are the unseen jobs. The jobs that only I will know I have done (and Mr. Michie, of course).

I spent all of Monday gutting our bedroom. That is they only way to describe it: “gutting”. I reorganized all of my drawers, went through the closets, set up a bag for clothes that I would donate and clothes that would become part of a quilt and clothes that are too sad to do either of the before mentioned with, so they went to clothes heaven.

Today, I have reorganized my pantry, so now you can actually walk into it and not have to climb over things or tie a rope around your waist, so someone will be able to pull you out if you need to be rescued.

I also and this was a major task for me, went through all of my old magazines. I decided what I would hold on to and what I would bring to school to recycle. I have to say, I hear my old Martha Stewart’s calling out to me from the bag by the door, (“Jennifer, can you hear me?”, sung to the tune from Yentl)but I am strong, I have lived with them in a basket for ages and paid no attention to them, so, as Martha would say: “its a good thing”.

I will admit and I have admitted this before, I do love to clean, it is satisfying. But, this type of deep cleaning is not only physically exhausting, but a bit mentally exhausting too.

Once you get in a groove, deciding what to keep and what to get rid of is easy, you just have to find that groove. I did and now I have a pretty bare closet and an empty drawer in my cupboard.

There is a few new things I need, like a few new shirts. I seem to go through them all to easily at work. I come home with paint, ink, a tiny hole where I have caught it on the edge of something, that over time becomes a series of holes. My clothes take a beating, but you can’t expect anything else when you work in an Art Department.

I am taking a break tomorrow from cleaning and will finish up a few little left over things this week. The main purpose for cleaning the pantry was so that I could access all of my craft supplies again and not have to fight to get to them, because I have a few projects up my sleeve for this break. They are for someone else and not for me, but I still might give you a little sneak peek here and there, so stay tuned…

Jack ‘O Lanterns

I have a terrible cold at the moment and in doing a little Halloween recognizance tonight I saw these on the Martha Stewart website and they made me smile. Nothing like some cheery Jack ‘O Lanterns to cheer you up!

A Summer List

As we neared the end of the school year this Summer, I decided to start putting together our Summer list. Just a few things that we wanted to do over the the coming weeks. We have each added in our own little things to the list as time has gone on and I decided to share a few snippets of it with you. Do you create a Summer list in your house?

1. Go to the Vintage Hemingway Fair in Southbank
2. See the Glamour of the Gods Exhibition
3. Start a crochet project-working on a scarf (✓ I have started working on it)
4. Watch The Goonies on a hot Summer night and eat lots of popcorn
5. Go to the BP Portrait Awards
6. Take a walk through the woods
7. Have plenty of picnics
8. Go to the movies to see Super 8
9. Pick a new cookie recipe out of the Betty Crocker Cooky Book to make
10. Read The Help (the first book on my Summer Reading List, it is by my bedside)

11. Lay in the sunshine and soak in its goodness
12. Take lots of pictures of our adventures

Christmas in July

I know, I have written about this before on my blog, but in the States, it is a big thing to have “Christmas in July” sales and events. This is not the case in England, where people look at you, as if you are half mad to even mention such a thing. As school is shortly coming to a close for us (tomorrow is our last day, Yipee!), I thought this would be a good time to use a bit of the Summer break to begin working on a few Christmas/winter-y projects.

One, being my crocheted granny blanket, which I have yet to have the chance to begin, with all the craziness of school going on around us. But, also to possibly start a few Christmas projects early. Here were a few things I came across and I might just try to make some of these, or at the very least be inspired by them, especially the sock monkey coffee cup wrap, he has personality!

Do you begin your Christmas making projects early, or are you a last minute kinda gal (or guy)? Enjoy!

Now is a good time to start collecting vintage cookie cutters at thrift stores and yard sales. These “frames” would be gorgeous to have up all year round!

These mice would make perfect teacher’s presents or classroom gifts. If you changed the colors they would even be cute for an Alice in Wonderland Themed Birthday Tea Party.

Want to make your own granny square blanket to stay cozy with when the weather turns frosty, go to Meet me at Mike’s for a granny square tutorial.

This sock monkey coffee cup wrap is too cute. Perfect for your coffee lovers, any time of year.

Tents

We have ONE week left to go of school and I am so ready for it to be over! This last term has felt as if it has gone on forever. It feels too long to still be in school, I am ready to enjoy a little bit of a Summer break.

Summer meant a lot of things and happy memories in my house growing up. One such memory in particular was the summertime rituals my sister and I always did. We played outside, creating bike “roads” out of chalk on our drive way. We went swimming, we went to the library and signed-up for the summertime reading list.

We ate ice-cream and fresh peaches from the farm. We played an endless game of monopoly that we made span the entire length of our Summer break and we built tents. We built huge tents with old blankets and sheets, sometimes encompassing a table and chair and part of a couch in our giant fortress.

We played underneath it, hung out, read, watched movies through our special “spy” hole aimed at the tv, we just had FUN. When I saw this tent tutorial, I just loved it. It brought back all of those little memories. This is a lot fancier than what we built, but I think just as magical.

What a fun summertime project for you and your little ones. I can just see it strung with fairy lights, filled with cozy blankets and pillows and the perfect place to lay down and read a book on a rainy day, falling asleep to the gentle pitter-patter of the rain, with the magical glow of the twinkling lights overhead.
