Leftovers

I can’t seem to get warm today, no matter what I do. If I drink any more tea, I think I might just float away. We had a lovely Thanksgiving. It is the first time, in I can’t remember how long, that we actually celebrated Thanksgiving on the day and not the weekend.

There is a fresh loaf of bread cooling on my counter for sandwiches tonight. Our fridge is filled to the brim with leftovers and it makes me giddy. I’m not always a leftovers girl, but Thanksgiving leftovers, I’ll never say “NO” too!

This weekend, I need to get stamps for our Christmas cards and Mr. Michie is going to help me carry a stack of parcels to be posted out. If the weather forecast stays at it is, we are supposed to be chilly and foggy tomorrow, so I think it might be the perfect day to head to the movies and eat tons of popcorn! But, we’ll just see how the weekend presents itself.

Here’s to the weekend, long may it last!

Dishoom

This weekend we tried a restaurant that has been on our list for a long time, Dishoom. All I can say is WOW! We got in just in time, when we left, the line was at least 60 deep heading down Kingly Street.

We sat in the bar while we were waiting for our table. I had an East India Gimlet and it was heavenly. The restaurant itself is old world charm meets 60s kitsch. The music was making me very happy! They even played one of my favourite songs, “Jaan Pehchan Ho”. (I don’t truly know if I love the song or the dancing scene in the film better. It’s just too good! Even my niece loves it. We’ve had a few dance parties on the rug together to this tune.)

We feasted on lamb samosas and far far, while we perused the menu. We decided we would mix and match dinner and share, so we had the best of both worlds. I ate the “Chicken Berry Britannia”. YUM, doesn’t even begin to describe it! Mr. Michie had the “Chicken Ruby”

I made sure I saved room for dessert and tried the pineapple crumble. Everything was just wonderful. We can’t wait to go back! I think I just might have our date night for this week already planned! 😉

Defrosting

autumn-print-by-esme-eve

Well, my candles are lit, A Christmas Romance is playing on TV, so naturally I’m watching it. Nothing like a little Olivia Newton-John and Gregory Harrison to get your morning going. I have a steaming cup of tea in front of me and brownies are baking in the oven.

I’m slowly defrosting from my walk this morning. It was so cold! But, my heart was warm from all the furry kisses I received. I saw a lot of my four legged friends as I made my way along this morning. I also had a nice chat with a robin, who I see from time to time. I whistle and he sings back. After a nice little chit-chat he usually follows me for a while down my path.

I still need to do a bit of prep work for dinner tonight and a bit of tidying up so we are set for the weekend. I’m going to work on wrapping up some packages this afternoon, with Christmas music blasting of course!

This weekend brings with it a chance for us to catch our breath and get a few things done around the house, while also finalising our Thanksgiving menu. I can’t wait for pumpkin pie! Really pumpkin pie and my leftover turkey sandwich is the highlight of my Thanksgiving.

I hope you have a wonderful and peaceful weekend, wherever you may be. xx

I See the Moon…

jennifer-michie-super-moon-2016

♥ I see the moon and the moon sees me! ♥

This was my first glimpse of the super moon. It has been raining and overcast here for the past two days, so we haven’t been able to see it either night. But I got a glimpse of the moon this morning on my walk.

It still looked beautiful to me, even if it wasn’t quite as full.

Good Morning

It was starting to rain as I headed out this morning for my walk. It was still dark and overcast. Along my way I was greeted by my favourite black lab. A very lovely old gal. Her person always lets go of the leash as soon as she sees me, as my furry friend likes to run to greet me and cover me with kisses.

I hit the woods as the sun was starting to rise. The rain and clouds seemed to disappear as if by magic. It was beautiful. There seemed to be mushrooms everywhere on my walk this morning and all the spiderwebs were glistening with rain drops in the morning sun. The wind was making them dance and sprinkle the droplets on the ground below.

I had the woods entirely to myself, I never passed a soul. It was pure bliss.

A Frosty Morning

When I left the house this morning the sun was just beginning to rise. My breath puffed out in little frozen white clouds in front of me. The thermometer said it was 26°F. The frost lay so thick on the ground that I didn’t do a lot of running. I was just trying to be careful not to slip and slide everywhere as I made my way down the street and to the woods.

As the sun began to rise the light was almost white. It was a Vermeer light. I could picture him leaping out of bed at the sight of the purity of the light this morning and racing around grabbing brushes and paints to capture it on canvas.

The pond had frozen over and the ducks were waddling over the sheet of ice, talking to each other as they went.

The robins were singing and I was greeted by a few of my furry friends. One of my particular favourites, a chocolate lab; who came bounding down the path to tell me “Good Morning” and give me kisses.

It was freezing, but it was glorious. Jack Frost had sprinkled my world in shimmering crystals and ice glitter last night and it was breathtaking.

Kay Starr

I’m ready for tomorrow to be over with. I’m sick and tired of reading things about the upcoming Presidential Elections. What a nasty campaign this has turned into. At this point, I’m reading anything else in the newspaper that doesn’t pertain to the elections and someone’s opinion about it.

In scanning over the paper this morning with a cup of tea in hand, I saw that the lovely Kay Starr had passed away. I was so very saddened to read that headline. She was an incredible woman, an amazing singer, with quite the set of pipes and one of my personal favourites!

Do you ever wonder if you’ve been born into the wrong time period? I do at times. There are a lot of periods I would have loved to have lived in and the 50s and 60s is one of them. The hair, the clothing, the furniture! The chance to have seen Kay Starr perform, sitting in a smoke filled cocktail lounge, a cigarette in one hand, a drink in the other, small lamps glowing dimly at the centre of each table, lighting up the white tablecloth below. You know a hush would fall over the crowd as she came onto the stage and then everyone would place their cigarettes in their mouths, so that they could break out into wild applause. I would be holding out for one song; a Starr classic and a song I listen to often, Wheel of Fortune.

This video is something else! I can imagine a lot of mother’s covering their children’s eyes when this came on TV.

Getting Ready

getting-ready

I’m getting ready for the weekend. It should be busy, there are lots of errands to run, a menu to plan and a trip to the grocery store. I have a few new recipes that I want to test out as well. Mr. Michie treated me to Ina Garten’s new cookbook, Cooking for Jeffrey, which should arrive today and I’m very excited. I don’t know if I have shared this here before, but I have a bit of a cookbook fetish. I don’t cook from all of them, some I use for inspiration alone. But I just love cookbooks. Especially vintage ones! I scored two great Christmas ones last year that are just the sweetest things ever.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, wherever you may be! Here’s to the weekend, long may it last!

The First of the Month

jennifer-michie-november-1

The first of November has brought a cold spell with it and it’s making me deliciously happy! We’ve been wrapped in a blanket of fog all day. The wind is twirling golden and red leaves down the street and the trees are swaying. Inside our house the candles are lit, a cup of tea sits by my side and my little heater is humming away keeping me cozy.

I’ve been quiet here again. I got the flu last week and it knocked me for six. I’m still not back to my old self yet. But, slowly and surely, I’m getting there.  I can’t even tell you the last time I had the flu? Fingers crossed this is my only bout of flu this season!

A Fall Walk

I’ve returned from the land of adorable children with sparkling blue eyes and babies who sweetly smell of milk and sleepiness.

It’s amazing how your heart just expands with love for this new person who has entered your world and I can’t imagine our family without her in it! I can’t wait to hold that bundle of love again. My sister and her husband make beautiful babies.

This morning, I walked out with Mr. Michie and went for a stroll. The sun was just starting to rise. It was cold. I could see my breath in clouds above me as I ran down the quiet streets. The golden leaves that had fallen were stuck to the wet black pavement. It was striking to see such rich colour against the coal black of the road.

jennifer-michie-fall-walk-2

By the time I made it to my woods the sun had risen. The woods were just mine for a few moments. The squirrels and birds were flittering around. The wind was blowing the tops of the trees as if they were dancing. The ground was wet and littered with golden, pumpkin orange and reddish tinted leaves.

jennifer-michie-fall-walk-3

My IPod shuffled to a Pat Metheny song and it was perfect. I captured a few photos and then my furry friends who I pass on my walks came bounding down the path to greet me. I get lots of licks along my walks and that makes me happy.

Now, I’m bundled up with a cup of tea. There is a dampness to the air today. It feels like fall. There is a beauty to England this time of year. The blush of colour on the trees stands out so starkly against the normally steely grey skies. It makes you long for scarves and hot chocolate and candles lit everywhere.
