Maple Snow

All this snow has made me think of “Little House in the Big Woods”.  I loved reading this books as a child, it was a world I wanted to belong to.

I wanted to be in the sleigh with them as they drove through the snow to their Grandparent’s house, for the sap harvest.  Once, they arrived Pa joined the men folk, trudging off into the snow to help start the sap buckets.  Drilling holes into the thick bark to place a pipe that would drain the sap into the buckets below.

The women worked hard indoors for the party that would come that evening under the starlight. At the party to celebrate the winter harvest, Laura and Mary scoop fresh powdery snow into bowls and their Grandma ladles a stream of hot syrupy sap onto their dishes to make snow candy with. The sap hardened on the snow, thus making a chewy maple candy to enjoy.

“Grandma…poured hot syrup on each plate of snow. It cooled into soft candy, and as fast as it cooled they ate it. They could eat all they wanted, for maple sugar never hurt anybody.”

I always wanted to do this when I was little, I loved reading about Laura’s pioneer girl existence, I wanted to be a pioneer girl myself! I wanted to run through the fields with my hair in braids and my bonnet hanging down my back, the warm sun baking me as I brought Pa his lunch pail.

I found this recipe for “Snow Sugar” on the Laura’s Prairie House website:

I have not tried this particular recipe myself, so I will have to wait for the next snowfall and pull out my glass bottle of syrup and get to work!

Shake! Shake! Shake!

Shake! Shake! Shake! Oh! Shake! Shake! Shake! Shake that snow globe, shake that snow globe!

We awoke this morning to another snowfall, this time it was just a lovely dusting of snow. It is like living in a little snow globe world.

I think I am the only person in the whole of England who is still happy there is snow underfoot!  I watched, over a steaming mug of tea, as big fat flakes gently fell to the cold earth. Winter is such a graceful and hauntingly beautiful woman.

Staying Cozy

Snowy Morning

Wake
gently this morning
to a different day.
Listen.
There is no
bray of buses,
no brake growls,
no sirens howls and
no horns
blow.
There is only
the silence
of a city
hushed
by snow.
– Lilian Moore, The Golden Book of Poems for the Very Young

We were kissed by the Snow Queen this morning.  Awaking to more snow, swirling around in big fat flakes, like we were living inside a snow globe being shaken up. I love these mornings!

I am off to make a warming cup of hot chocolate and take my “lambiekin” clad feet back to bed for awhile to just enjoy the morning’s peace…

Snow! Snow! Snow!

It snowed! And more snow is coming this weekend. Everyone has been off this week from School and some from work. I think it has given people a chance to just catch their breath after the Holidays.

There were a few flurries out there today, but I think it has calmed down for the next few days, more snow headed in for the weekend the weather report says, so I definitely need to go grocery shopping. I think fresh homemade bread and chicken soup will be on the menu for sure!

I am just enjoying the snow, the ice, the twinkle of my Christmas lights (it is still too dark and wintry to take them down yet!) and the wonderful silence that only snow brings!

Little Christmas

Happy Epiphany! Today, I moved my little Wiseman to the manger. We always celebrated “Little Christmas” in our house. There was always a small treat waiting at our places at the dinner table. It was that last little special time of Christmas. Once, there was a very big Epiphany present waiting for us.

Our Church was raffling off a Nativity Set and my sister and I bought so many tickets we were convinced we had won. But when they announced the winner at midnight mass, it was not us. That was alright, we thought, another family needed it more than us.  But the Church store had one left and my parents bought it for us as a surprise. We could not believe it. Lovingly touching the beautiful little figures we were in awe, that was a wonderful Epiphany dinner we had that night admiring our little set placed on my Great-Grandmother’s hutch.

I love nativity scenes. One of my favorite belongs to my Grandmother. My Great-Grandfather, Papa Nonni had it built in Italy for their Church. It is so exquisitely crafted. The colors on the 1950’s Italian style Creche are still as vivid today as it was when he first pried open the wooden crates and lifted them out of their hay beds.

When I was younger the Church decided to replace it with a smaller version and were going to throw this set out. My grandmother would not allow it and brought it home, where she proudly displayed it on the hall table every Christmas.

It was the first thing you saw when you came in through the door. It said very simply to me, “Christmas”, Christmas is here.  Some of the pieces are a little worse for wear and the donkey is missing an ear. But the colors are still bright and the story is still there and as I moved my Magi this morning to the stable door, I thought of her doing the same thing.

Baby Its Cold Outside

Brrr! I write my first post of the New Year in the twinkling glow of Christmas lights with a hot chocolate by my side to try and warm up.

We just arrived home this morning from visiting my family for the Holidays in the States.  We made it home just before Christmas in a blizzard and left in one as well! The weather is freezing here in England too, but sadly no snow!  So it looks like school is going to start back tomorrow! Poo! Where has the time gone, it seems like only yesterday we left, with the crunch of snow underfoot as our cab took us to the airport to go home?

I hope that everyone has had a wonderful, peaceful and magical filled Holiday season! Its not over yet, we still have Epiphany! My Mom always left her decorations up for “Little Christmas”, and somehow I always convinced her (wink! wink!) that if she kept them up a little longer it would help me do better on my exams if I could just see the happy glow of a Christmas light while I studied.

She always did! What a good Mom! I have a hard time taking mine down after January 6th and since I am always sad to have to say “Goodbye” to my family until the next time we say “Hello”, I think my decorations might be staying up a little bit longer too….

Still Snowing

Well it is still snowing. We have bundled up and stayed cozy and warm tonight inside. We have about 6 inches at the moment. Will it be a White Christmas? I hope so! The wind is whistling away and the snow is swirling around in mini white tornadoes.

The wind is so strong it sounds like the snow storm in Rudolph, I am waiting for the shingles to start peeling off and presents to go rolling by as the wrapping is torn off of them.

I love these frosty wintery nights and the unique peace that a snowfall brings.  It seems to nestle all the houses in a blanket of love and brings a gentle quiet to the world.

It Snowed!

It Snowed yesterday and it is supposed to snow today, tomorrow, the day after that… little flakes fell at first and those made way for huge fluffy flakes softly falling down, like angel feathers.

The Christmas lights were on, cup of tea was in hand, music was playing and I was sewing, what could be better than that?

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

Everybody Neat & Pretty? Then on with the Show!

Today, I am busy attacking my house! Ironing Christmas tablecloths, dusting, vacuuming and putting away things I don’t have room for when all the Christmas decorations are out. We are going to decorate this weekend. I can’t wait!

The poor house has been neglected at the moment since I have been busy finishing up orders. But it is smiling and gleaming once again! I am still in my pajamas, listening to Christmas music and it is so frosty and bitterly cold outside today it has truly set the tone for a silvery wintry feeling!!

Well unfortunately the elves are busy helping Santa this time of year so I will get no help from them or the Kitchen Fairies, so it is back to work I go…..
