Minka

I have had this film sitting in my Instapaper “box” for about two weeks now and as I was catching up with reading through everything yesterday, I finally watched this film.

I was extremely touched by this story. It is beautifully shot. I appreciated their desire to preserve something old and this passion for preserving interlaced with his background in Architecture has turned into a career in conserving minkas. What a blessing to be able to do something that you truly love!

These two men’s lives have been intertwined within this house and with this house. Their memories join all the others that have occurred under that roof and that have been ingrained in the wood during the lifetime of this minka.

This is a story about passion, about preserving our past to preserve our future and most importantly a story about love and the people we encounter that make our world all the better for knowing them, for our journey would not have been the same without them, that road might never have been taken.

Tomorrow…

It is only Tuesday and already this week has taken off like a kite dipping and diving in a strong wind.

I had a little post, I was working on for you, but that will have to wait as I am teaching another chemical photography class tomorrow afternoon and I have been busy with my final preparations for that.

I am so excited to see what they will come up with. We will be making photograms, first in the style of Man Ray and then I will have them create a digital collage from the work of 3 photographers I like and intertwined within that, will be slices from one of my favorite poems. The digital collage piece will be printed on to acetate and then we will make a photogram from it.

So, much is whirring in my head, I am finding it hard to find a little peace, but, I like staying busy. Off, I go, as my kite just caught another updraft…

Moonrise Kingdom

I saw this trailer a few months ago and lately (this week) it has been popping up everywhere. So, I thought I would share it with you.

I really like Wes Anderson. His films are delightfully quirky, odd, funny, serious, witty… Whatever he puts his hand to, to me, comes out just right.

In particular and one of my favorites: The Fantastic Mr. Fox. He brought that book to life with a lot of love and humor and a truly eccentric quality which all of his films seem to have, besides a great cast, superb use of language and wonderful fashion.

His newest movie, Moonrise Kingdom, appears to capture all that he is known for and all that I love about his style. I can’t wait to see it! Enjoy!

A Bonsai Tree House

Maybe it is because I am a child of the 80’s, I grew up watching the Karate Kid and seeing Mr. Miyagi carefully tend to his bonsai trees, or maybe it is because I love all things miniature, or maybe the answer is simply because gardening is in my blood and I have a thing for trees, but the art of bonsai has always fascinated me.

I spotted these today while reading one of my favorite artsy blogs, Colossal. I think they are unbelievably beautiful, artful, imaginative and if I was the size of Goose Girl & Foxy they would be the perfect little hideaway.

Created through a variety of materials they come out of the imagination of Japanese artist Takanori Aiba. Who has combined his talent and knowledge of labyrinth design and architecture to manipulate the trees and bring these scenes to life.

The Girl with Seven Horses

The Girl with Seven Horses, is a photography series that I have fallen in love with! The imagination to visualize your clothing in such a way that it creates this “believable” object, astounds me. A mitten as a hoof? Adorable!

The horses are all “wearing” her clothes that blew away from her clothesline in a storm and now the girl has gone out searching for them traveling all over to collect her horses. I hope your weekend is as magically adventurous as this story and image series!

How "Dot" Was Made:

I just loved the animation I showed you yesterday. Today, I thought I would share, how it was made.

The cellscope was created by Professor Daniel Fletcher, of UC Berkeley, as a way for doctors and medics working in remote and/or impoverished areas to take photos with the microscope attached, of blood samples and other specimens and be able to send the image via their phone to any medical or science lab in the world for analysis. Pretty cool!

Wallpaper Backgrounds for the New Year

I like looking at something interesting when I stare at my computer’s desktop wallpaper, trying to remember what folder I am looking for. I won’t say it is strictly a “girl thing” to desire something that is pleasing to the eye, because I have known Mr. Michie to go for a certain overall “look” on his Macbook as well.

Sometimes it is just a picture I like, sometimes I make my own background, other times a wallpaper created by a favorite artist, but more often than not lately, it is a calendar created by Christiane Engel of Desert Friends:

In case you were looking to freshen up your desktop wallpaper for the new year, I thought I would share some of my favorite choices at the moment with you (the first image also happens to be the cover of a Bon Iver album, which makes me like this picture even more):

Last Day of School

Today was the last day of school before the Christmas break! There was snow, it was a half day, Mr. Michie took me out to lunch and now there is cozy Christmas lights on and cuddling on the couch. Oh, the joy of being on vacation! PURE BLISS!

The Birds

I love this “Birds” inspired fascinator from the Etsy shop Topsy Turvy.

It is the photograph that makes it, with its Cindy Sherman-esque style. I love it! It would be the icing on the Halloween cake to wear this, if you went as a the stunning Tippi Hedren, to your Halloween party.
