Defrosting

autumn-print-by-esme-eve

Well, my candles are lit, A Christmas Romance is playing on TV, so naturally I’m watching it. Nothing like a little Olivia Newton-John and Gregory Harrison to get your morning going. I have a steaming cup of tea in front of me and brownies are baking in the oven.

I’m slowly defrosting from my walk this morning. It was so cold! But, my heart was warm from all the furry kisses I received. I saw a lot of my four legged friends as I made my way along this morning. I also had a nice chat with a robin, who I see from time to time. I whistle and he sings back. After a nice little chit-chat he usually follows me for a while down my path.

I still need to do a bit of prep work for dinner tonight and a bit of tidying up so we are set for the weekend. I’m going to work on wrapping up some packages this afternoon, with Christmas music blasting of course!

This weekend brings with it a chance for us to catch our breath and get a few things done around the house, while also finalising our Thanksgiving menu. I can’t wait for pumpkin pie! Really pumpkin pie and my leftover turkey sandwich is the highlight of my Thanksgiving.

I hope you have a wonderful and peaceful weekend, wherever you may be. xx

I See the Moon…

jennifer-michie-super-moon-2016

♥ I see the moon and the moon sees me! ♥

This was my first glimpse of the super moon. It has been raining and overcast here for the past two days, so we haven’t been able to see it either night. But I got a glimpse of the moon this morning on my walk.

It still looked beautiful to me, even if it wasn’t quite as full.

Good Morning

It was starting to rain as I headed out this morning for my walk. It was still dark and overcast. Along my way I was greeted by my favourite black lab. A very lovely old gal. Her person always lets go of the leash as soon as she sees me, as my furry friend likes to run to greet me and cover me with kisses.

I hit the woods as the sun was starting to rise. The rain and clouds seemed to disappear as if by magic. It was beautiful. There seemed to be mushrooms everywhere on my walk this morning and all the spiderwebs were glistening with rain drops in the morning sun. The wind was making them dance and sprinkle the droplets on the ground below.

I had the woods entirely to myself, I never passed a soul. It was pure bliss.

A Frosty Morning

When I left the house this morning the sun was just beginning to rise. My breath puffed out in little frozen white clouds in front of me. The thermometer said it was 26°F. The frost lay so thick on the ground that I didn’t do a lot of running. I was just trying to be careful not to slip and slide everywhere as I made my way down the street and to the woods.

As the sun began to rise the light was almost white. It was a Vermeer light. I could picture him leaping out of bed at the sight of the purity of the light this morning and racing around grabbing brushes and paints to capture it on canvas.

The pond had frozen over and the ducks were waddling over the sheet of ice, talking to each other as they went.

The robins were singing and I was greeted by a few of my furry friends. One of my particular favourites, a chocolate lab; who came bounding down the path to tell me “Good Morning” and give me kisses.

It was freezing, but it was glorious. Jack Frost had sprinkled my world in shimmering crystals and ice glitter last night and it was breathtaking.

A Fall Walk

I’ve returned from the land of adorable children with sparkling blue eyes and babies who sweetly smell of milk and sleepiness.

It’s amazing how your heart just expands with love for this new person who has entered your world and I can’t imagine our family without her in it! I can’t wait to hold that bundle of love again. My sister and her husband make beautiful babies.

This morning, I walked out with Mr. Michie and went for a stroll. The sun was just starting to rise. It was cold. I could see my breath in clouds above me as I ran down the quiet streets. The golden leaves that had fallen were stuck to the wet black pavement. It was striking to see such rich colour against the coal black of the road.

By the time I made it to my woods the sun had risen. The woods were just mine for a few moments. The squirrels and birds were flittering around. The wind was blowing the tops of the trees as if they were dancing. The ground was wet and littered with golden, pumpkin orange and reddish tinted leaves.

My IPod shuffled to a Pat Metheny song and it was perfect. I captured a few photos and then my furry friends who I pass on my walks came bounding down the path to greet me. I get lots of licks along my walks and that makes me happy.

Now, I’m bundled up with a cup of tea. There is a dampness to the air today. It feels like fall. There is a beauty to England this time of year. The blush of colour on the trees stands out so starkly against the normally steely grey skies. It makes you long for scarves and hot chocolate and candles lit everywhere.

Countryside Stroll

We took a long walk through the countryside yesterday. Rambling along the paths. We strolled by a stream, through the church yard where an 800 year old church still stands (with medieval paintings still on the walls) and headed to the deli for lunch.

We sat by the duck pond for a bit after lunch and then decided to continue down the lanes, where we saw fields of grazing sheep and cattle. After following the trail through one particular paddock, we were greeted by four gorgeous horses who all came to say hello. There was lots of petting by us and nuzzling by the horses.

The day was perfect, the sun was out, but there was a delicious breeze going. We ended up doing about a 10 mile stretch. It was bliss.

Goodbye July

Jennifer Michie Queen of Sweden Rose

I can’t believe that July is already coming to a close. How can that be? I’m definitely running behind this year because we haven’t even had our “Christmas in July” party. Maybe we can just do it in August instead?

Yesterday we spent arm in arm walking around one of our favourite parks. The roses were in full bloom and this pinky peachy apricot beauty bred by David Austin, called Queen of Sweden, was particularly alluring. It’s smell was just delicious.

The Day to Day

I’ve been quiet here again. Not intentionally by any means. I continue to be saddened by current events. Has the world gone mad? In light of all that is happening I’m focusing on keeping the house cozy. Ensuring that it is a place of refuge and love. I’m focusing on my walks and taking in the butterflies, poppies blossoming in a rainbow of colours, the trees dancing in the breeze. I’m listening to podcasts and music, drinking lots of sweet tea and trying to stay cool in the heat.

I’m just taking one day at a time. Tomorrow brings with it the last day of school and truly the beginning of summer for us. I can’t wait!

Sunshine

Jennifer Michie Sunshine

I headed out early for my walk today and was rewarded with a gloriously cool morning and lots and lots of sunshine. Although, now it is pouring with rain outside my window.

Here’s to the summer! Please bring us lots more sunshine, it makes my soul sing!

Soldiering On

Jennifer Michie Wood

Do you know what it feels like to be walking out of the ocean and be knocked down by a wave? That feeling when you are dragged under and you try to fight your way to the top gasping for air, but are knocked down again? That is how I feel lately.

I’m still in a state of disbelief that Brexit is carrying forward. Even though this was simply a referendum and Parliament has yet to say that it will be acted on; that Article 50 will be invoked. Everything is moving on as if we will leave the EU. It’s just this giant snowball effect that seems to be gaining huge momentum before it crashes into the brick wall at the end of the hill.

I’m hearing so many stories at the moment from others and they are shocking! One such story comes from one of my husband’s colleagues. A man working with her husband who is originally from Pakistan and has lived here for maybe 10 years, is now a citizen of the UK. Last week he voted to LEAVE! His reason, he stated was because of immigration. Ironic isn’t it? I mean what do you say to that? How do you combat ignorance? How do you combat moronism?

Jennifer Michie Moss

I try to use my morning walks to clear my head. At the moment, I seem to be listening to a lot of Miles Davis and Alec Baldwin’s Podcast “Here’s The Thing”. Yesterday, I caught up on one I had missed from February of this year, where he spoke to Molly Ringwald. I’ve long been a Brat Pack fan and like many others, I’m sure, I was shaped by, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink. To this day, my sister and I still shout out lines from The Breakfast Club to each other. In catching up on some blog reading this morning, I saw on Julia’s site that Sam’s house in Sixteen Candles is currently on the market. It’s always funny to me how things seem to collide. When you notice something and suddenly it starts popping up everywhere.

Jennifer Michie Snail Jennifer Michie Breakfast

I used my walks to exhale. To continue to see the beauty around me and I am blessed to always be rewarded. I came across a snail this morning, slowly making his way across the sidewalk. His shell was lovely. I watched a bunny eating his breakfast in someone’s front yard. I watched the sun play peek-a-boo with the clouds. I feasted on a cup of tea and two toasted slices of banana bread this morning with apricot jam. I just was.
