A Festival of Trees

Jennifer Michie Trees 3

Yesterday, while picking up a few last minute surprises, we noticed that one of our favourite little churches was holding their annual Christmas tree festival. We went inside and the smell of fresh pine filling those cool stone walls was divine!

A number of local organisations and schools had all designed and decorated their own trees, it was homespun and very sweet. The Ladies Guild was running a mini cafe with all profits going to the church. It was filled with delicious two to three tiered layered cakes, cookies, cinnamon rolls, hot coffee and tea. The tables were decorated for Christmas as well with evergreen, holly and candles. It was simply a festival of happiness!

The second best part of our day was stopping by another favourite haunt on our way home. BBQ for dinner on a frosty night, when the beer is cold and the BBQ hot, nothing could be better!

Brown Paper Packages

Jennifer Michie Brown Paper Packages

Brown paper packages, tied up with string. These are a few of my favourite things! I was humming that line as I wrapped a loaf of freshly baked banana bread up with parchment paper and hunter green gingham ribbon this morning. The first of many baked goodies that are being delivered to friends old and new.

Winter Sunrise

It was freezing again when I left the house this morning. The wind almost knocked me over. By the time I got to school the sun was just starting to peek over the rooftops. A glorious sunrise turned into a very overcast day, but that doesn’t matter, for I was blessed to see a new dawn.

First Frost

The moon still stood high in the coal black morning sky as I headed to work this morning. It peered out from a mist of clouds to give an almost greenish glow. My breath hung in front of me and under the glow of street lamps the metal railings sparkled where the frost had taken hold.

I’ve stayed bundled up at work today as I can’t seem to shake off the chill that’s in the air. It truly feels that Winter has arrived in all of her artic frosty glory. It feels like December and I love it!

A Photo Shoot

We woke up early this morning and ran out in the rain to get coffee and go grocery shopping. Everyone in the grocery store seemed to be in a bad mood, maybe it was the weather? It has rained all day without ceasing, but I don’t mind it. The candles are lit, we made a fresh loaf of buttermilk banana bread, tried a new recipe for dinner, drank tea, listened to Christmas music and worked on this:

Those objects were the beginning ingredients for our photoshoot that will become our Christmas card this year. I still had the watercolour of the evergreens I did last year, so I cut them out and made a stand for them and decided to make them part of the background. I’m going for a 50s/60s look this year.

The End of the Week

Jennifer Michie Hydrangea

It was raining as I left work today, but I stopped to capture this sumptuous hydrangea blossom. It’s hues deepening with the progression of autumn. We have reached the end of the week, the house feels still, the candles are lit, music is playing, dinner is in the oven, the dryer is whirring away and I feel happy, peaceful. The weekend has begun.

A Midwest Sunset

Jennifer Michie Sunset

Now, I am a Southerner, but I’ve been spending a bit of time in the Midwest this summer. Now, there is nothing like watching the sun set over the water in Charleston, but the sunsets here have a beauty all of their own!
