A Bluesy Kinda Day

The weather forecast originally said that it would be a partly sunny and a little bit of a warmer weekend. That is not the case, Summer might be fighting to throw in a couple more days before Fall takes over for good, but for today, she has not succeeded, the sky is a powder steel grey, the air has a bite to it, the tree branches are swaying to the rhythm of the wind.

Mr. Michie has a lot of work to do this weekend, so he is staying tucked away, busily editing his thesis, I am staying cozy in sweatpants, sweaters, slippers and drinking copious amounts of tea. It is a day for soulful, bluesy, jazz and my music of choice at present is the Home for the Holidays soundtrack.

I love the organ keyboard shelling out those sweet notes. It always makes me think of this great little restaurant in my hometown, it started out in a much smaller venue when it first opened before moving to a bigger place across the street. I liked the new place, but there was something about that older joint, it had character.

On Friday nights they would have a guy come in to play music, he was a bit eccentric for sure. He was normally half lit, he would sit at his keyboard, cigarette in his mouth,  eyes half closed and his upper body was bathed in a smoky haze from his cigarette, forming plumes of billowy white vapor around him. You could ask this guy to play just about anything, and he would know the notes.

I could see him playing parts of this soundtrack, bobbing his head and shoulders to the music as his fingers tickled the keys of his keyboard. It’s music for a staying in kinda day, for baking pies, for contemplating, for reading, for stirring the turkey potpie filling, I have simmering away on the stove, a day just for being. So, that is what my Saturday will be, a day just to be.

Safe and Sound

This has been such a busy week this week. I have so many things to share, but I have too much to do tonight to share a lot. One of which is baking a batch of snickerdoodles for a colleagues birthday tomorrow, because snickerdoodles are just plain happiness!

But, in the meantime while I am waiting to share some things with you, I thought I would share this, my parents are always hip to the scene and told me last night that I needed to watch the video because I would love it and I did!

So, even though I have been radio silent for a few days here and there this month, we are safe and sound!

Your Theme Song

I love music. I think I know what the soundtrack to my life would contain, but I am sure there are some hidden musical surprises in there that I wouldn’t have expected to pop up. And as new music continues to be made and produced the soundtrack to my life continues to evolve.

A few weeks ago, I was sitting on the couch, with the window open, the breeze blowing in and wafting the curtains around, while I sat busy working away on my macbook. I would occasionally look up when people walked by, just taking them in as they chit-chatted or watched their kids charge ahead of them on their bikes with colored streamers flying from the handles.

Our cottage is on a side street, so we are quite used to people cutting through with their music blaring, but this one particular evening a black Range Rover pulled up across the street and a very tough looking guy jumped out. He was bald, both of his arms were full tattoo sleeves of Maori design and he was extremely buff, as his biceps were bulging out from his shirt sleeve. He looked like someone you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of. But appearances can be deceiving and I don’t judge a book by its cover!

His windows were rolled down and as he waited in line at the ATM he bobbed his head to the next track that was beginning to blare out of his stereo. Now, I would never have put him down for it, but this guy was “Old School”. He bobbed and weaved his head to The Stylistics. This must be his theme tune, because last night, he just so happened to pull up again, with them blaring out of his speakers and this exact same song playing. Now, I’m an “Old School” girl, so it made me smile, you just can’t beat some good old beach tunes on a Summer afternoon!

So, here’s to Mondays and Summer and a good soundtrack/theme song to your life!

Treasure

PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR AND WAVE ‘EM LIKE YA JUST DON’T CARE!

This song is making me happy lately! A good beat and old school rhythm… It is a definite Thursday, happy tune!

Get Lucky

We are always listening to something in our house and usually dancing to it as well. I heard this song at the weekend and just loved it! It is off of Daft Punk’s new album. Mr. Michie being the cool cat daddy that he is, had already heard it, got the single and had been quietly enjoying it, but now he has come clean and shared it with me.

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it reminds me of another song, it will come to me, I know it!  There is this 70’s vibe going through it that I just like! In the meantime, it just makes me smile!

HAPPY! HAPPY! HAPPY!

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

It is cold outside. The windowpanes were frosted this morning when we woke up, but the sunrise was gloriously greeting us as we headed to school. The sky was filled with pinks, peaches and hues of lemony yellows. It quickly turned into a violet gray and began to get darker and darker.

We arrived at school and I went upstairs to the Art department to get ready for our second day of exams, I had to run an errand at the front of the school and as I went downstairs and headed for the door the sky had gone from a violet gray to a charcoal white and snow was billowing down in great puffy pom-pom shaped balls.

I felt like Lucy from “Charlie Brown”, I wanted to dip my head back, lift my face to the sky and stick my tongue out and catch them. It lasted for only an hour or so and unfortunately didn’t stick, but it made my morning.

I have been listening to Christmas music all day today in the cupboard and I thought I would share an album I really like with you, enjoy!

Poor Moon

We are a Fleet Foxes household and so I was very excited to learn that a few of their band members, Christian Wargo and Casey Wescott, along with Ian & Peter Murray of The Christmas Cards, have formed Poor Moon.

It started out as a long distance project between the 4 of them, that has now blossomed into the album, Illusion.

I have had it for a little while and maybe it is the change of weather, or my mood, but I am listening to this a lot lately. In particular, one song I keep playing over and over is: People In Her Mind. The riff at the beginning of this song, is so deliciously reminiscent of some of my favorite music of the 70’s.
