The Last Monday

Today is the last Monday before Christmas. How can that be? December seems to be flying right past us, even though we are drinking up every single drop.

Last night we watched Home Alone, while I wrapped up a secret Santa present and finished the last of our Christmas cards. I was missing two addresses and between my Mom and my sister, they had me covered and happily forwarded me the details.  Mr. Michie sat at the table with me and wrote out his cards for work. We drank tea and ate the most delicious brownies, sent to me by a kindred spirit.

Mr. Michie also very graciously gave me about three hours of his time yesterday, helping me rework my blog. It’s been a long time, since I’ve done some behind the scenes hacking and I was happy to have expert help on hand. So now, no matter what updates are thrown my way, everything should just stay put! I might change a few more things, but for now, I’m satisfied.

This morning, I ran to the grocery store after a frosty 6 mile walk and couldn’t resist the fresh rolls they were putting out. They were still warm! So, off I meandered home to eat a warm roll with butter and make a cinnamon hot chocolate for breakfast. Our lights are glowing, the candles are lit, my Christmas potpourri is simmering away on the stove and Christmas music is playing throughout the house. I’m so very happy!

Friday

I’m late out for my walk this morning. I normally go when it’s still dark, but I got caught up in doing things around the house. I’ve mopped the bathroom and kitchen floors and replied to a few e-mails and chit-chatted with my postmen after he knocked on our door with a bundle of parcels in his hands for us. It is one of those days where I can’t seem to get ahead. I’m doing things, but that creates another pile of items to be sorted. I’ll get there in the end.

It’s damp outside and raining, it feels like a Friday. The air has that feeling. I’ve been singing along to Christmas tunes while I clean. It makes my heart happy. The weekend is up for grabs. We have a few errands to run on Saturday and I’m working on a grocery list for the week ahead. I have a new recipe that I want to try from a cookbook that Mr. Michie surprised me with.

Mr. Michie had a late school night last night and so when he got home, we ate breakfast for dinner. I made brown sugar and maple syrup roasted apples and sausages with clementine zest, cheese grits and a pan of buttermilk biscuits. He was very happy. After dinner we cozied up on the couch and watched Love Actually. That movie always puts me in a good mood.

Here’s to the weekend! Long may it last!

The Nature of Daylight

Today feels like a Monday. It’s not yet noon and the sun already appears as if it is starting to make it’s descent. The shadows are changing. As we move into December the lamps are turned on and the candles are lit a little earlier. At the height of Winter, we are normally almost dark by 3:30ish. It doesn’t usually bother me, the early evenings I mean. I like being cocooned in our little cottage, listening to music, cooking, reading. The darkness that envelops us this time of year, feels to me, like Mother Nature’s way of saying: Stop! Rest! Refuel! Be in the moment! Be!

I feasted on a turkey sandwich for brunch and drank a cup of Christmas tea. I totally smothered the turkey in cranberry sauce. The last taste of Thanksgiving. The rest of the turkey is cut up and ready to be used in a pot pie. Mr. Michie cooked dinner last night. It was the first time we actually cooked something since Thanksgiving.

After running errands this weekend, Mr. Michie took me on a date to the movies. We saw Arrival. I’m still thinking about it. I really enjoyed it and I feel that I need to see it again to keep piecing it all together. We each had our own interpretation.

The mid-century modern house that Amy Adams’s character lived in was scrummy! All the light that would pour in would be intoxicating. The soundtrack features one our favourite songs, On the Nature of Daylight. The title is fitting today, since I have been pondering that very thing, the nature of daylight.

Leftovers

I can’t seem to get warm today, no matter what I do. If I drink any more tea, I think I might just float away. We had a lovely Thanksgiving. It is the first time, in I can’t remember how long, that we actually celebrated Thanksgiving on the day and not the weekend.

There is a fresh loaf of bread cooling on my counter for sandwiches tonight. Our fridge is filled to the brim with leftovers and it makes me giddy. I’m not always a leftovers girl, but Thanksgiving leftovers, I’ll never say “NO” too!

This weekend, I need to get stamps for our Christmas cards and Mr. Michie is going to help me carry a stack of parcels to be posted out. If the weather forecast stays at it is, we are supposed to be chilly and foggy tomorrow, so I think it might be the perfect day to head to the movies and eat tons of popcorn! But, we’ll just see how the weekend presents itself.

Here’s to the weekend, long may it last!

Dishoom

This weekend we tried a restaurant that has been on our list for a long time, Dishoom. All I can say is WOW! We got in just in time, when we left, the line was at least 60 deep heading down Kingly Street.

We sat in the bar while we were waiting for our table. I had an East India Gimlet and it was heavenly. The restaurant itself is old world charm meets 60s kitsch. The music was making me very happy! They even played one of my favourite songs, “Jaan Pehchan Ho”. (I don’t truly know if I love the song or the dancing scene in the film better. It’s just too good! Even my niece loves it. We’ve had a few dance parties on the rug together to this tune.)

We feasted on lamb samosas and far far, while we perused the menu. We decided we would mix and match dinner and share, so we had the best of both worlds. I ate the “Chicken Berry Britannia”. YUM, doesn’t even begin to describe it! Mr. Michie had the “Chicken Ruby”

I made sure I saved room for dessert and tried the pineapple crumble. Everything was just wonderful. We can’t wait to go back! I think I just might have our date night for this week already planned! 😉

Getting Ready

getting-ready

I’m getting ready for the weekend. It should be busy, there are lots of errands to run, a menu to plan and a trip to the grocery store. I have a few new recipes that I want to test out as well. Mr. Michie treated me to Ina Garten’s new cookbook, Cooking for Jeffrey, which should arrive today and I’m very excited. I don’t know if I have shared this here before, but I have a bit of a cookbook fetish. I don’t cook from all of them, some I use for inspiration alone. But I just love cookbooks. Especially vintage ones! I scored two great Christmas ones last year that are just the sweetest things ever.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, wherever you may be! Here’s to the weekend, long may it last!

An Evening Alone

The Norwalk High School Prom in 1968

We made it through the week! It’s always exciting to wake up on a Friday and go to work, the day always seems brighter, knowing it is the last of the working week. But this week, getting through was a particular feat, as there has been more downs than ups.

Mr. Michie is one of the chaperones at the prom tonight. I can’t wait to hear his stories when he gets home. It is being held in an old barn, which will just be beautiful. My high school always had our prom in the cafeteria. I never went to prom. My girlfriends and I would always have a big night out instead. I don’t regret not going. I’ve always marched to my own little beat anyway.

I don’t often have an evening to myself, so I plan on watching a movie with a bowl of popcorn and stretching out on the couch.

Hopefully the weekend brings a bit of much needed quiet and rest with it. Here’s to the weekend, long may it last!

Twelve

East Enders Kissing

Variation on the Word Sleep

I would like to watch you sleeping.
I would like to watch you,
sleeping. I would like to sleep
with you, to enter
your sleep as its smooth dark wave
slides over my head

and walk with you through that lucent
wavering forest of bluegreen leaves
with its watery sun & three moons
towards the cave where you must descend,
towards your worst fear

I would like to give you the silver
branch, the small white flower, the one
word that will protect you
from the grief at the center
of your dream, from the grief
at the center. I would like to follow
you up the long stairway
again & become
the boat that would row you back
carefully, a flame
in two cupped hands
to where your body lies
beside me, and you enter
it as easily as breathing in

I would like to be the air
that inhabits you for a moment
only. I would like to be that unnoticed
& that necessary.

Twelve years ago today, in the church where my parents and my grandparents before them were married, I walked down the aisle to become Mr. Michie’s wife. Here’s to the next twelve, I love you!

Tuesday Things

This morning brought our glorious Easter break to a close. It was back to school for Mr. Michie. I don’t think I was ready for that. We’ve had a wonderful “staycation” just the two of us. Getting things done around the house, cooking together, watching movies, listening to music and doing some school work here and there. It has been so nice to just move to our own beat.

But this morning the alarm went off at five and just like that, the carriage turned back to a pumpkin. It’s cool this morning and damp. I tended our little garden while Mr. Michie made coffee. Among a few things we had gotten at the nursery was a mixed pack of ranunculus, so other than a red and a pink that were already starting to bloom, I didn’t know what we would get. The buds are beginning to fill out on the other plants and it looks like we have a few white and yellow flowers in there. So the garden is starting to feel very “Spring” like and very colourful.

After kissing Mr. Michie goodbye this morning, I sat down for five minutes with my cup of coffee to read the news and plan my day. I decided to live on the wild side and hit the shuffle button on my music. Neil Young’s “Down By The River”,  was the first thing to come on and considering this is one of my favourite Neil Young songs, I’m gonna take this as a sign, that it’s gonna be a good day!

A Snail’s Pace

Yesterday Mr. Michie had a conference near Regent’s Park and I had the afternoon off, so we decided to meet. It was wonderful! It felt like we were being naughty, just walking around, taking in the world, while everyone else was at work.

He bought me a surprise and as the sales woman wrapped it, she asked if it was a special occasion? To which we replied, “YES! We are together for the afternoon!”. Just being together is special occasion enough for us. We wandered slowly, letting everyone else pass us by. We were absolutely content with our stolen afternoon. Here’s to more stolen afternoons!
