Daaaa-Da

“Daaaa-Da”, those two notes, live in history as the sound of an underwater villain fast approaching. In the historic words of Chief Martin Brody, “We’re gonna need a bigger boat!”

JAWS is a movie, I have long adored. It was always on TV in the Summer and for some reason, it would without fail come on the night before we would be heading to the beach and I would inevitably be drawn into watching it.

It is a classic of cinema, how can you pass it by when it is on? But, that would mean that by the time we got the beach, the thought of swimming in water past a depth of 3 feet, was not something I could do for the first few days.

I have never had the chance to see JAWS on the big screen. They have re-released it for the Summer and so Mr. Michie took me to see it last night for my birthday. We just had a good old fashioned Summer-time birthday party, just the two of us. We got a couple of cheeseburgers and a coke for dinner and then munched on popcorn in the theater.

Seeing it on the big screen was incredible, even though I knew what was coming, I still jumped. We had a few first timers in there as well and there was a scream here and there, it was funny. It was a fun way to start off the birthday weekend celebrations. Then we came home and feasted on french silk pie.

That is what I was using my lovely jar of fluff for. I made a few recipe changes, but it was absolutely delicious! I even had a piece of pie for breakfast this morning. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Our Weekend

We had a very busy two days this past weekend. We worked on redoing some of our flower pots in our little street garden. We lost our 4 year old rosemary in the last frost and so we replaced it with a brand new very happy looking little pot of rosemary that sits near our door. I love to run my hands through its delicate branches and smell the sweet smell of rosemary on my fingertips.

On Saturday we went out to run errands. I did a bit of shopping and picked up some things for school and home, while Mr. Michie went to the Library to work on a paper. I picked him up when I was done and the smell of the library just took me back.

This is a very beautiful library. It is fairly new, but they have paid attention to detail and used their spaces wisely. They have two gorgeously lit stained glass windows in the entrance way and display cabinets here and there with small exhibitions inside or pieces of local history and lore.

I have to say, I truly love libraries! What is it about a library? Card catalogues and the dewey decimal system and books bound in plastic wrappers that crinkle when you open their spines, the smell of age rippling out from the pages as you flip through, it all just makes me happy.

So, as Mr. Michie finished up, I stole his phone and did a little photographing of my own. I found a vintage wallpaper book and fell in love with the Kate Greenaway wallpaper page. I have an original piece of hers that Mr. Michie gave me as a Birthday present the year before we were married.

It hangs in our room and is one of the things that greets me “Hello!” in the morning. It is from an alphabet book of hers’, with a pink “J” edged in gold and a little girl who stands on the “J” and holds a windmill in her hand. It is beautiful and delicate and makes me very happy, every time I see it!

After he was packed up and ready to go, we gathered our things and headed to the movies for a date. He took me to see, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. It was delightful. A lovely way to spend a rainy afternoon, watching a sweet movie, eating popcorn and holding hands.

We grabbed some dinner after the movie and headed home and just as we were about to walk in the door, Mr. Michie spied this:

Our first olive! It might not look like much, but we have had that olive tree almost as long as we have been married and I am happy to see the fruits of our labors before us, it was a nice gift from Mother Nature on the eve of Earth Day.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

One of my St. Patrick’s Day traditions, is to watch this movie! It doesn’t get better than this! Sean Connery singing, leprechauns, the Irish countryside, the banshee, the fiddle playing…Darby O’Gill and the Little People, is always worth a watch!

I wish you all a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day! And hope that good fortune comes your way today!

Goose Girl & Foxy have been busy today too, be sure to check on them:

Let’s Get Together!

“Let’s get together”, is one of my favorite songs from The Parent Trap. It came on Sunday afternoon right before I started working on Sunday dinner. I kept popping my head around the corner to watch it in between cooking. We made a roast with The Pioneer Woman’s “Crash Potatoes”, a fresh salad and a chocolate fudge cake for Sunday dinner, it was wonderful, if I do say so myself!

I have always been a Hayley Mills fan and this was one of my most beloved movies. The air of nostalgia that surrounds it, the time period, the clothes, the California ranch house, oh, the cast! Hayley Mills, Maureen O’Hara and Brian Keith as the parent’s. Tommy Sands and Annette Funicello, singing the opening song! It doesn’t get much better than that!

It reminds me of being little. I can remember watching this movie with my family, all camped out, munching on popcorn, laughing, talking, enjoying each other’s company, just as it should be! Together!

Moonrise Kingdom

I saw this trailer a few months ago and lately (this week) it has been popping up everywhere. So, I thought I would share it with you.

I really like Wes Anderson. His films are delightfully quirky, odd, funny, serious, witty… Whatever he puts his hand to, to me, comes out just right.

In particular and one of my favorites: The Fantastic Mr. Fox. He brought that book to life with a lot of love and humor and a truly eccentric quality which all of his films seem to have, besides a great cast, superb use of language and wonderful fashion.

His newest movie, Moonrise Kingdom, appears to capture all that he is known for and all that I love about his style. I can’t wait to see it! Enjoy!

The Artist

Mr. Michie took me on a date Saturday afternoon to see a movie I have been dying to see: The Artist. We LOVED it! And Jack, the little dog (named Uggie in real life), just made the movie!

I grew up watching old movies. I have a weakness for them! Who doesn’t stop the channel when they hear Doris Day belting out a tune, or Debbie Reynolds singing to her true love through the window in Tammy and the Bachelor, or watch Rock Hudson pull Jane Wyman into his arms in All that Heaven Allows, or laugh and cry while watching Myrna Loy and Jeanne Crain in Cheaper by the Dozen and the follow-up with Belles on Their Toes. Not to forget every old Christmas movie ever made!

Spoiler alert: I do discuss the film plot line from this point on, so if you haven’t seen it and want to keep it a surprise, please read no further!

I adore a good old fashioned movie and The Artist is just that. I loved that it was silent, their expressions said so much. They didn’t have to speak, you knew, through the music, through a glance what they were feeling. Even without words, I still felt so much, I started to dislike his wife, even though she never really did anything wrong. After gifting her with a strand of pearls, it was so clever to watch her as her wardrobe first prominently displayed the necklace, it was all cut around it, but as her feelings for him changed the clothes began to cover it up, until it was completely enveloped by her dress.

Hmm, a movie that makes you think, not many do that today. It’s interesting that in talking to some students before the weekend who had seen it, they told me they didn’t like it. We spoke about it and what I finally ascertained out of them was that they felt it was too much to take in, it wasn’t spelled out for them, it wasn’t easy, it was boring because there was no talking. What is wrong with something making you think? Making you question? We as a society don’t do enough of that at times.

George Valentin (the artist) a famous silent film star, bucks at the idea that movies will become “talkies” and the girl he really loves and helped jump start her career is starring in the first “talkie” for the film studio he used to work at it. After a series of events from that point to the end, they realize that each of them feel exactly the same way about each other: they are in love and she ends up rescuing him from himself.

George however, feels he is washed up and can’t belong to this new world of talking movies, but Peppy convinces him and the studio bosses otherwise. The movie ends with their magical dance number, you hear the music and their feet tapping as they move, reminiscent of Fred & Ginger. Once they cut, the crew applauds and the studio executive asks them to do the number one more time, to which for the first time since the movie began we hear George speak. He utters two words : “With Pleasure!” in Jean Dujardin’s delectable French accent and you are charmed beyond belief.

“With Pleasure!”, could be this generation’s: “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse!”; “Here’s looking at you kid!”; “Frankly my Dear, I don’t give a Damn!”; “I’ll have what she’s having!”; “May the Force be with you!” (I had to put that in there for Mr. Michie). It has to go down in history as a famous one liner. You went through so much, you wondered if this would turn out well, would he swallow his pride? He did, they danced, they laughed, the movie ended on a happy note.

I don’t buy into the Oscar hype, I see movies because I want to, I know this is up for a gazillion awards, but as we left Mr. Michie said to me, it deserves every award it is up for and I have to say, I agree. It was enjoyable, it was old-fashioned, it was still relevant now, it was extremely clever, it is a classic.

It’s Possible!

“It’s possible for a plain yellow pumpkin to become a golden carriage!”

If you know the lines to that song, than you know one of the sweetest Rodgers & Hammerstein shows that ever was. We are on our Winter break this week and while I was busy in the house cleaning, I flipped on the TV and saw that “Cinderella” was on and I just had to sit down and watch it.

I can still remember the first time I saw this on TV when I was little sitting in front of the set with my footed pj’s on, I was mesmerized. Just as my parent’s were when they would tell me about the first time they saw it and what a really big deal it was, for something like that to come on TV. It still holds as much magic for me now as it did then. There is such an air of nostalgia around it; the colors of the costumes and the set design, it is beautiful.

I adore when they put something so sweet and wholesome on television during the school breaks, something you could sit down and watch with your children while you work on an art project, something that will make them think and not just “talk” to them, that uses intelligent language and no slang. In my own little corner in my own little room, this was the perfect thing on TV to take a break to today. Well, back to work…

Harry Potter Fever

Harry Potter

We’ve caught the “Harry Potter Bug”. I loved reading the Harry Potter books. I remember when the last book came out, armed with a flask of hot chocolate and a blanket, I waited patiently for the bookstore to open its doors at midnight for the Harry Potter Party, where my pre-ordered book was waiting to jump into my hands.

Foxy, wasn’t so sure about Harry Potter at first, he felt that they might be a little too childish for him, but I convinced him to give them a go and sure enough he was hooked. We have seen all the movies as well and couldn’t wait to see the final one together.

We celebrated the opening of the new film on Friday night, by watching “The Deathly Hallows Part 1”, ordering a huge cheese pizza, popping a big bowl of popcorn and eating peanut M&Ms. So, when Saturday came we were more than ready to see the final installment of this wonderful series.

If we were going to see it, I was going in costume! I made a wand and a hat and Harry Potter glasses for Foxy and I to wear. We waited patiently in line to collect our tickets and then stuffed ourselves with hot dogs, popcorn and coke. We laughed, we cried, we held our breath even though we knew how it would end. There were moments when I was on the edge of my seat, Foxy just used his paw to gently push me back. It was a magical movie and a magical day out!

Hot, Hot, Hot Chocolate

The Polar Express was one of my favourite books growing up! My librarian in school read it to us one afternoon and I can still remember her speaking the words in her crisp little voice and then turning the book for us to see, the plastic covering crinkling as she bent the spine back and moved it in a sweeping motion across our eager faces, so we could all see the illustrations.

That afternoon, when my Mom came to pick me up, I climbed into the car and proceeded to tell her all about it. Well, elves must have been listening, because that Christmas, I received a beautiful hardback copy of the book under my Christmas tree, signed by Mr. C.

When the Polar Express movie came out a few years ago,  I couldn’t wait to see it. It differs from the book in that they had to flesh the story out to make it a feature animation, but Mr. Michie and I just loved it. One of our favourite parts was this:

You can’t watch this and not want to run to Paris to sip some of Angelina’s rich hot chocolate with mountains of sweetened cream scooped on the top, well at least I can’t watch it without desiring too!
