Today is the first day it has truly felt summery! Last week, we were so chilly that one day, it was actually colder than Christmas day! But today, we’ve hit a balmy 80°F, the sun is shining, there is an occasional breeze blowing by. It feels WONDERFUL! Now, I just want it to last!
I ate fresh strawberries and cantaloupe for lunch today. The strawberries were so deliciously sweet, their juice squelched in my mouth and they tasted of summer. Today felt like a beach day. I’m ready to put my toes in the sand, finish reading my book and just listen to the waves roll in!
I would like to watch you sleeping.
I would like to watch you,
sleeping. I would like to sleep
with you, to enter
your sleep as its smooth dark wave
slides over my head
and walk with you through that lucent
wavering forest of bluegreen leaves
with its watery sun & three moons
towards the cave where you must descend,
towards your worst fear
I would like to give you the silver
branch, the small white flower, the one
word that will protect you
from the grief at the center
of your dream, from the grief
at the center. I would like to follow
you up the long stairway
again & become
the boat that would row you back
carefully, a flame
in two cupped hands
to where your body lies
beside me, and you enter
it as easily as breathing in
I would like to be the air
that inhabits you for a moment
only. I would like to be that unnoticed
& that necessary.

Twelve years ago today, in the church where my parents and my grandparents before them were married, I walked down the aisle to become Mr. Michie’s wife. Here’s to the next twelve, I love you!
I was up early this morning and went for a walk in the woods. It was breezy. Last night it rained and the air this morning was so clean. The forest smelt of earth. The sun was dappling my path, the birds were singing and every time the wind blew the raindrops pitter-pattered down. It was magical. What a wonderful way to start a day.
It was cool on Tuesday and when evening came the heavens opened and it rained all night! We woke up yesterday to an emerald green world. My mom and I threw on shoes and went out to play in the garden in our pyjamas. Weeding, cleaning up and looking in amazement at all the beauty that seemed to spring forth from the dirt in a single night.
That’s my mom in the above photo, in Charleston, South Carolina when she was a teenager. Isn’t she beautiful? She still has that same sweet face and gorgeous smile!
Happy Mother’s Day to grandmothers, mothers and sisters too! This year I am getting to celebrate Mother’s Day in a very special way, for the first time in a very, very, very long time, I am not only in the same country as my Mom, but I get to spend Mother’s Day with her!
I just know this woman is welcoming us into her home. Don’t you just love this woman’s outfit and the wallpaper. What a photo!
This weekend is the beginning of the end of my time off with Mr. Michie. I treasure this time. We’ve spent the morning doing odd jobs. We’ve ordered a few bins to finish off organising the closets and then that job is officially ticked off the list. We’re catching up on podcasts and we’re listening to a lot of music. We seemed to have moved back into a Jazz and 70’s phase. So lots of Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis and ELO are being played in the house at present.
We made BBQ this week and are turning the leftovers into tacos for dinner tonight, we just need to plan a menu for the next few days. The first week back to school is always a killer, so if we can be organised about it, it makes everything run much smoother on the home front.
This weekend also heralds in The Masters, so I think some fried chicken and pimento cheese sandwiches just might be in order along with some sweet tea, of course! I have my favourite and I’m pulling for him, just like I was last year.
I’m looking forward to a weekend filled with walks, coffee, candle light, good music, great food and even better company! Here’s to the weekend, long may it last!
Today we attacked our bedroom closets and I am now sitting amongst a scattering of bags filled with items to donate to the charity shop. The house smells amazing because we are slow roasting a pork shoulder to make BBQ for dinner tonight. So dinner and another area decluttered are two things I can tick off of my list today.
To fortify us for an afternoon spent gutting closets, we made bruschetta for lunch. I marinated the tomatoes over the morning so they were extra flavourful before spooning them over a loaf of ciabatta that I had drizzled with oil and rubbed with garlic before toasting. Fresh mozzarella sat on top while the tomatoes were delicately nestled all around.
A few sprigs of torn basil and a splash of balsamic vinegar and lunch was complete!
