Our Day

Yesterday we finished our major overhaul of the room we chose to attack during 1/2 term. There are still a few more things to sort though, and to be put back in their rightful place, but it feels so wonderful to be rid of anything we don’t need.

We recycled, donated, organized, made two bags of items to take to school that will live in the cupboard as still life objects, dusted, vacuumed, mopped and sat for a five minute break to catch our breaths.

We decided to have a big lunch yesterday since Mr. Michie had an online meeting last night. I made a fresh spinach and artichoke dip, with a couple of pieces of crusty bread and carrot and red pepper sticks to dip into it. It was wonderful.

We cheated and watched something while we ate, an episode of “Bunheads”. I will be sad when this show finishes for the season!

For dessert I had a chocolate chip cookie and it was actually smiling at me.

It reminded me of one of my all-time favorite “Bewitched” episodes, when Tabitha turns herself into an oatmeal raisin cookie and then smiles at her mom, with the raisins forming the smile, too cute! (It starts about 5 minutes in)

It must have been the day for things looking like other things to me, because I had a handful of popcorn last night and this piece looked like a little alien creature waving at me, I thought it looked cute and couldn’t eat it, but Mr. Michie grabbed it and ate it instead.

A Turkey Sandwich

My Monday wish came true, I got to eat a turkey sandwich! This year, that is all I truly wanted out of Thanksgiving, was a turkey sandwich and a slice of pumpkin pie. We left work last night in the pouring rain and got soaking wet waiting for the bus, I don’t know if my jacket will ever dry out! We came in, took off our wet clothes, threw on some pj bottoms and sweatshirts and heated up a little spinach and artichoke dip.

We snacked on that and talked about our day, then we worked on making some turkey sandwiches. I sliced the bread while Mr. Michie picked out a Christmas movie. It had been a long day, so we decided to just keep vegging out and stayed on the couch under our quilt to eat our delectable sandwiches made with the Thanksgiving leftovers and watched The Santa Claus. Our evening would not have been complete if we didn’t eat a slice of pumpkin pie with whipped cream of course!

Today was such a long day, I am already ready for the weekend again, crazy isn’t it!

Dinner

I was on my own for dinner tonight. I heated up the vegetable soup we made yesterday and made some cheese toast to go alongside it. It was delicious, it was warming, it was a quiet dinner. I always enjoy being with Mr. Michie, but sometimes it is nice to be left to your own thoughts. After a day of constant noise, a little quiet solitude is a very welcomed gift.

Making Lunch

We try and vary our lunches from week to week. We decided to make pasta salad this week. Now, as Mr. Michie will tell you, I have a thing for packaging. I can’t help it, I have been known to buy something simply for the packaging. I have been staring at this pasta every time I walk down that particular aisle of our local grocery store, today it jumped into my hands.

This box of pasta was so beautiful, I just had to photograph it. In 1927 at the age of 14, Domenico Cocco began learning the art of making pasta. In 1944, he passed on his passion and knowledge to his son Giuseppe who continues to make pasta today in the village of Fara San Martino in Italy.

The taste of it, just on its own with nothing on it was simply wonderful. It tasted more like fresh pasta then dried pasta. I can’t wait to taste it in our lunch tomorrow after it has absorbed theĀ flavorsĀ of the tomatoes and olives and mozzarella and olive oil and oregano, I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!

Cupcakes for Breakfast

The breakfast of champions! This deliciously iced, sprinkle topped cupcake and a frozen coffee was my breakfast this morning.

It was not healthy, I know, but it was absolutely scrumptious!

A Date

A few months ago, while walking through our local mall I noticed one of the stores was now covered in white plastic wrap and there was a big sign on it, stating that a Krispy Kreme would be coming soon to this location!

Well, it opened this past week and this weekend Mr. Michie took me on a date there. It was wonderful! The place has a retro vibe, the pink patterned wallpaper on the wall where we sat, was so adorably 1950’s.

They struck the right chord between old and new for me. In my hometown our Krispy Kreme looks exactly like it did when it first opened its doors in the 1950’s. It is where my friends and I would go, if we had been out late, it was where we picked up dozens of boxes of doughnuts to serve after church on Sunday, as my parents ran the “meet and greet” committee and it is where we always pulled in to when the “HOT” sign was on. Because, I don’t know if you are aware of this but it is against the law to drive by a Krispy Kreme store if the “HOT” sign is on (just kidding).

It is also where I took Mr. Michie to on a date when he came to stay with my family one Christmas, he had never been to a Krispy Kreme before and after one bite of a hot glazed doughnut melting into a pile of sugar on his tongue he was hooked.

So, it was only fitting we had a date at our local Krispy Kreme. MMM! We ate some and we took some home for breakfast. Nothing but happiness, sugar and happiness, that is what Krispy Kreme is!

A Walk in the Country

image (2)The rain that was pouring when we arrived subsided early in the morning and we got to spend our first real day in nothing but sunshine! It was still very windy, it made my fur ruffle, but it was lovely nonetheless!

We got up yesterday morning and Gigi went to work making everyone breakfast from the breakfast basket in the cottage. We had fresh local bread and bacon with scrambled eggs, it was heavenly.

After breakfast we got ready, put on our wellies and headed out. I wanted to do one of my favorite walks. It is the long way round to the pub, but on the way, you pass fields you can cut through, an adorable village hall, a charming stream, an old church that has been there since medieval times and lots of farms and fairytale-sque cottages.

village hallWellies on and bundled up, we headed out across the fields with the mud sticking to our boots, we soon washed that off in a huge puddle and headed for the hall. It was just as I had remembered it from the Summer. Quaint. From there is was down the stream and across the fields to walk the tree lined avenue up to the church.

It was still decorated for Easter with brownware pottery vases that hung off the pews filled with wild flowers and daffodils! I sat down by my favorite stained glass window in there and in the cool of the church and the silence, I just reflected.

stained glassWe moved on after that heading back down the avenue but this time walking under the old gatehouse and came across a field with a big fat pheasant in there, who just studied us, while we gazed at him.

Next through the storybook village, where people sell their fresh jam, eggs and vegetables from their doorsteps and then on to the pub.

After such a long walk, I was ready for a pint! It is a local pub with a good micro brewery attached and I was more than ready for my favorite ale from them, however, “Lovely’s Fair” was not in season, so we tried a pint of “Stella”, a single hop pale ale that had a little bite at the end, but went wonderfully with my sausage and mash. Our bellies were full, my whiskers were covered in gravy, so Gigi helped me clean them.

We headed out to go home and cut by one of the big farms, their paddocks full of new mamas and baby lambs, all running around soft and fuzzy looking. Their little lambikin ears sticking out and raising up as we spoke to them, adorable! We took the long way home to enjoy a bit more of the countryside views.

We spent the evening, listening to music, dancing around and staying cozy by our little fire. We all went to bed deliciously happy as our lungs were filled with country air, our bellies filled with good food and our hearts filled with the love of life and good company!

Candyland

We are on Christmas break now and ready to enjoy the holidays. Today, The Flying Scotsman took me on a date to a Winter Wonderland.

We walked through rows of little chalets blanketed in lights and greenery. The smell of hot chocolate and fresh doughnuts and gingerbread filled the air.

We came to a little Candyland village and decided to walk through. It was so much fun. Foxy found his favorite: sparkling watermelon slices. I ate gummy bears and vanilla marshmallow milkshakes.

My wee Scotsman played Christmas music for us on his bagpipe while we strolled along. It was a lovely day!

Thankful

Foxy Whipped CreamWell, we are thankful for many things this month. Most notably, getting to share a Thanksgiving feast with the Michie’s. We stuffed ourselves with turkey and cornbread dressing and mashed potatoes and green beans with roasted peppers.

Our contribution to dinner was dessert. Pies are a specialty of mine and I got to work rolling out my dough. I cut stars to go around the edge and GiGi helped me make the pumpkin filling. The house was filled with the scents of cinnamon and pumpkin baking into a lovely custardy pie. The smell filled every nook and cranny of the cottage, it definitely felt like Fall.

GG Whipped Cream

As it was in the oven, we went to work making the whipped cream to serve alongside it. GiGi added in the sugar and vanilla and I did all the whipping. After it began to get fluffy, I dived in for a taste test, my paws and whiskers were covered with luscious cream! It was delicious.

Unfortunately, there are no pictures of my finished pie, topped with lashings of billowy whipped cream, for by the time we ate dessert, we were all to stuffed, to happy and enjoying each other’s company too much to take a picture. Alas, it is a memory only for us to relish. I hope all of you have had a lovely November, Christmas is soon on its way.
