Al Pioppi

pioppi-5As I was perusing through my blog reading list last night, I saw a post on Colossal that peaked my interest. Maybe it was because this restaurant opened on my Birthday many moons ago, or maybe it is because my family is part Italian and hearing this little man named Bruno spoke to me. He has spent the past 40 years creating a small amusement park alongside his restaurant in the woods. It is art.

There is something to be said for Italians, there is an ingenuity there that is all there own. My grandfather can look at something and see how to fix the problem, or design something that will do what he wants, my Dad has that same gift. I call it a gift, because it is, not everyone has the “eye” to see the solution, to see how it can be improved, or to see how it could be created in the first place.

This story was incredibly charming, Bruno is quite the doll. Enjoy!

On June 15, 1969 in Battaglia, Italy a man named Bruno bought a few jugs of wine, some sausages and a few other items and set up a tiny food stand underneath a tree to see if anyone would show up. By the end of the day he had sold almost everything and the family restaurant, Ai Pioppi, was born. The next month he had a chance encounter with a blacksmith who didn’t have time to make a few hooks for some chains. Bruno decided he would learn to weld himself and enjoyed it so much he began to dream up small rides he could build to entice new customers to Ai Pioppi. It turned out to be brilliantly successful.

Now forty years later, the forest around the restaurant is packed with swings, multi-story slides, seesaws, gyroscopes, tilt-a-whirls, and bizarre kinetic roller-coasters for adults and children. In this artfully filmed 10-minute documentary by a team over at Fabrica, we get the chance to meet Bruno, see many of his rides in action, and learn a bit about his philosophy on existence and death.

For this post I also included a few photos courtesy Oriol Ferrer Mesià who visited Ai Pioppi in 2011 with several friends. You can see many more shots here and here.

A Lesson in Welding

Vintage Welder

I am so excited! I get to go on a welding course tonight for school, so I can learn how to use the arc welder and the mig welder! My Dad has already given me a blow-by-blow of how each one works (I don’t know what he doesn’t know!) and I am tres excited to start making some sparks fly.

I think we all know what is coming next, there is only one great welding, dancing, based in the great city of Pittsburgh movie that I know of, cue Flashdance:

Hope you have a very happy Monday, wherever you may be today!

The Weekend

Faye Faires 1966 Itsbetterthanbad

Isn’t she cute? The pink suit, the adorable shoes, the HAIR! It is huge and I LOVE it! Her little “Hey, Y’all” wave.

The weekend is here and I am so excited. We are going to relax, run some errands, maybe go to the movies…

Last night we had a truly Fall dinner in the form of, pumpkin pancakes, the mix was made by Target’s, Archer Farms, it was delicious! On, a side note, I adore Archer Farm’s packaging as well and the mix was already in a pouch that onced open could be ziplocked! Target is always making my life easier! We had sausage on the side and I made a spiced cider recipe that Mr. Michie spotted on my Pinterest page.

Jennifer Michie Breakfast for Dinner

Those pumpkin pancakes, were mouth watering! I love having breakfast for dinner! My Fall food has continued as this morning I was able to get a pumpkin spice latte from Starbuck’s, the very sweet barista made me one, even though they don’t launch them until October 3rd. Happiness is…

This Friday is already shaping up to be wonderful:

  1. My Mom called me while I was getting ready for work, we got to talk for a few minutes, it has MADE MY DAY!
  2. When I walked outside this morning the sky was a gorgeous pearly pink, like the inside of a conch shell. The air was fresh and breezy.
  3. Even though I had to wait for a second tube to come through this morning, because everyone was packed like sardines in the first one, I got a seat! That almost never happens!
  4. I got my FIRST pumpkin spice latte of the season. WOO-HOO!
  5. It is pay day today!

Well, here’s to the weekend, long may it last!

The 50th Annual Blueberry Festival {Part 2}

Jennifer Michie Clementine's 1Jennifer Michie Clementine's 2

After exploring the town of South Haven, we had worked up quite an appetite! It looked like everyone was heading toward Clementine’s, so that is the direction we took too!

We were not disappointed! The atmosphere was fun (it was housed inside an old bank), the staff were friendly and the food was GREAT! They even had a special blueberry menu for the Festival.

My Mom and I split a piece of blueberry pie for dessert in honor of the festival. Gigi and Foxy were with us too. Foxy came out of my bag for a piece of pie, the blueberries turned his whiskers a lovely shade of deep blue, he spent the rest of the evening trying to lick it off, while we laughed, he looked quite charming with those blueberry whiskers!

South Haven is an adorable town, I’m putting it on my list of places to visit again! Maybe, I’ll time it just right and there will be another Blueberry Festival! One can always hope!

The 50th Annual Blueberry Festival {Part 1}

Jennifer Michie Blueberry Festival 1

Last weekend, my Parent’s took me to South Haven, Michigan, where the town was holding their 50th Annual Blueberry Festival. It was so much fun!

We walked down the main street, did a little antiquing, wandered into the General Store, went into the official Blueberry Store, where they had made pretty much anything you could imagine out of blueberries and were selling fresh blueberries too, the smell was amazing!

It was here that I spotted an old photocopy of Miss Betty Jones, who won the pie contest in 1970, of course I snapped a few pictures of it, I love old recipes, especially ones that had newspaper writes ups like this one, they are special! I wonder what Miss Betty Jones is doing today? I want to make her pie!

We decided to head down to the riverfront and listened to the Jimmy Buffett cover band and watched the boats come in, it was such a beautiful day! We were truly lucky!

An Afternoon Treat

Jennifer Michie Afternoon SnackWhat could be better than getting exactly what you want? And how often does that actually happen, when the stars collide and it all turns out perfectly? Not, that often, but it did this particular afternoon with my Mom. We had some errands to run at Target, so I got the Mocha Frappacino’s and she picked up the mini Target cupcakes and the perfect afternoon snack was created! All filled with wonderful, wonderful S-U-G-A-R! After all, we had to keep our shopping energy up!

P.S. I made it home in one piece with a lot of surprises in tow for Mr. Michie. I am going to be spending the next few days, catching up on life here and posting pictures of my trip home, I have cookies and babies and a Blueberry Festival to share with you yet!

Eddie’s Steak Shed

Jennifer Michie Steak ShedMy family loves cool and unusual places. Last night, my parent’s took me to a very unique place. We went to Eddie’s Steak Shed. This place has A LOT of character. The sign is reminiscent of the 1960’s, with great  personality, the place you go to for a good steak and a liquor drink and if it was the 1960s a Mad Men cigarette, I could see Don Draper coming here!

Their road sign is graced with a blue bull, but it reminded me more of Paul Bunyan’s Ox and the size of the steaks reminded me of the “Old 96’er” that John Candy eats in The Great Outdoors. Between all of us last night we might have eaten a mini cow, but it was delicious!

So, if you are ever passing through Granger, Indiana, I would head toward the Shed, because it is an experience not to be missed.

P.S. I am winging my way back across the great pond today, so I might be radio silent for a few days while I get back into my England groove of things. I wish that my time here would just go on forever, because being with my family, makes me more than happy.

The Road Back Home

We headed back home last week, but this time through Walnut Creek, Ohio. It was beautiful! We stayed in the heart of Amish Country, drove through fields with hay stacked almost as if it had come out of a Monet painting and feasted on cream sticks and cinnamon twists and grape and cherry hand pies. What could be better? Happiness is…

We have spent the past few days in a glorious blissful existence. We sat on the back deck while Milly joined us to sunbathe her golden fur, watched the baby wiggling her adorable twinkle toes and spending our evenings working on First Birthday Party plans. Oh what fun!
