Happy Mother’s Day!

Jennifer Michie Mom in Charleston

That’s my mom in the above photo, in Charleston, South Carolina when she was a teenager. Isn’t she beautiful? She still has that same sweet face and gorgeous smile!

Happy Mother’s Day to grandmothers, mothers and sisters too! This year I am getting to celebrate Mother’s Day in a very special way, for the first time in a very, very, very long time, I am not only in the same country as my Mom, but I get to spend Mother’s Day with her!

She is not only my Mom, but a soulmate in life.

Happy Mother’s day, I love you!

Rain

Spring Duck

It rained most of yesterday and was still raining this morning when we woke up. We used the rainy day to clean up a few things around the house and feast on homemade pimento cheese sandwiches, fried chicken and bread & butter pickles. With sweet tea and banana pudding for dessert of course!

The pitter patter of raindrops have stopped now and we are ushering in the first day of May with a cloudy grey sky and lush green grass and foliage. Almost over night everything has started to come into bloom. It truly feels “spring like”!

Tuesday Things

This morning brought our glorious Easter break to a close. It was back to school for Mr. Michie. I don’t think I was ready for that. We’ve had a wonderful “staycation” just the two of us. Getting things done around the house, cooking together, watching movies, listening to music and doing some school work here and there. It has been so nice to just move to our own beat.

But this morning the alarm went off at five and just like that, the carriage turned back to a pumpkin. It’s cool this morning and damp. I tended our little garden while Mr. Michie made coffee. Among a few things we had gotten at the nursery was a mixed pack of ranunculus, so other than a red and a pink that were already starting to bloom, I didn’t know what we would get. The buds are beginning to fill out on the other plants and it looks like we have a few white and yellow flowers in there. So the garden is starting to feel very “Spring” like and very colourful.

After kissing Mr. Michie goodbye this morning, I sat down for five minutes with my cup of coffee to read the news and plan my day. I decided to live on the wild side and hit the shuffle button on my music. Neil Young’s “Down By The River”,  was the first thing to come on and considering this is one of my favourite Neil Young songs, I’m gonna take this as a sign, that it’s gonna be a good day!

The Weekend

I can’t believe that 1) It’s Friday already! My time off with Mr. Michie is going way too quick! And 2) It’s the First of April! How is it April already?

This weekend brings with it music, dancing, glowing candles, good food and wonderful company. Here’s to the weekend, long may it last!

Rolling Along

Jennifer Michie Dinner Rolls

We had so much fun over the Easter weekend, I don’t know where the time went? I made a batch of The Pioneer Woman’s “Refrigerator Dinner Rolls” out of her Dinnertime cookbook to go along with our Easter meal. It’s a marvellous recipe. The dough can stay refrigerated for up to five days, so you can have freshly made rolls anytime you want. Let’s just say that a hot roll, oozing with French salted butter makes me very happy!

Easter Morning was also our first day of “Springing Forward”. We’re three days in and I’m still thrown off. Funny how jet lag doesn’t get me, but change the time by one little hour and I’m a walking zombie.

We’ve had peeks here and there of sunshine, but it keeps eluding us. It’s been very windy here of late and I keep checking on my pots outside to make sure they haven’t blown away. Mr. Michie helped me stabilise our little olive tree yesterday, as he kept taking a nose dive with the storm gales. I’m ready to replenish our pots and baskets with some colour here and there, but as the weather hasn’t been so nice, we are waiting to head out to the nursery to pick new flowers. Hopefully that’s a job we can accomplish this week.

I love the school breaks when we just get to march to our own beat. Well, for the most part anyway, as there is always school work to still be done either at home or at school itself. But, I’m always grateful for the time that we have together. Where we just roll along, going with the day where it takes us.

Spring

Victoria Magazine Spring Quote

Yesterday, we heralded in the “First Day of Spring”. Yet, it doesn’t feel very “Spring” like outside. The sky is a lavender grey and there’s a chill in the air. It was so dark by four o’clock today, I had to turn the lamps on! But, there are already little touches here and there if you know where to look. The bulbs are starting to shoot up from the earth and the fields are turning greener and greener.

After my Friday break, I went back to spring cleaning today and attacked the bathroom. Getting rid of anything out of date or finished with. Now, it too has joined the list of organised spaces in our cottage. Decluttering is a wonderful feeling!

School breaks up this week and we have a few Easter plans. We’ve pretty much nailed down a menu for Easter Sunday and we’ve put a few things on our “To-Do” list for when we are off. Going to the garden nursery is one of them, I’m ready for a lot more colour outside of our door, so re-planting the garden pots it is! I’m also hoping for my first spring walk through Regent’s Park, one of my favourite places to spend a lazy strolling day.
