The Hits Just Keep Coming

Well the hits just kept coming this weekend. Between the fish, the late nights at work, the endless bleaching of the cupboard floor and all the other craziness, my washing machine now has something wrong with it.

I’m telling you I could write a country music song about fish and life and things breaking, but I don’t have a dog or a woman who left me and took my truck, so I guess it wouldn’t be as an exciting song as it could be. But, I could think of a few of my favorite country tunes that would just about sum up this week.

I called the store where my washing machine was purchased from, only to have the women on the other end of the phone tell me to do everything I had already done. So now it will be a service call to Bosch and I hope that I can get someone to come out a little later in the afternoon, as I can’t leave work early this week because we have exams going on.

So, I took myself off to the laundromat  What an experience that was! I think it might have even been in a worse state then it was in the last time I was in there, which was almost 9 years ago.

But hey, we’ve got clean clothes! The dryers worked like a dream, everything dried in 30 minutes, I can’t do that record speed with my washer/dryer. I read my book, I watched the rain, I put my back against the dryer to keep myself toasty and I just was. There was no other place to be other then where I was right then and that counts for something.

I snapped these shots with my little wildfire, not as nice as Mr. Michie’s IPhone, but they did the job! I came prepared with my bounce sheets (I always stock up when I go home), my laundry detergent, my book, some water and a ton of change, although I had to get more from two different places as there is no change machine in the laundrette.

I hope this week has better things in store for me.

Watch Out!

Watch out weekend, here we come! These two ladies look like they would be fun on a night out on the town, don’t they!

I have packages to mail, Easter candy to buy, errands to run, St. Patrick’s day to celebrate; we’ve been invited to an Irish gig at a pub!

I am so glad I made it to Friday, because after the week I’ve had, there were a few moments there when I didn’t think I would pull through. I was just hanging on by sheer will power!

May next week be better and hopefully all of the fish smell will be gone from the cupboard, as I had to bleach my floor again yesterday and throw out a box that had absorbed the odors,  ugh!

On to the weekend, long may it last!

Peach Cobbler

I grew up on a peach farm, so loving peaches is just in my blood. Mr. Michie, not so much at times, but I think I have finally convinced him!

The peach cobbler we made on Sunday was just delicious. Mr. Michie and I shared a bowl of it last night for dessert.

Happiness is…

Lessons From Lucy

I have been meaning to share this post for ages and came across it again the other day. It was written by Liz Danzico about her dog Lucy. I first saw it on SwissMiss. If you have ever loved anything with fur, this post is for you, animals are little blessings in our lives:

Jan 14, 2013

There it was — as persistent as it had always been. A stubborn, short, quiet hair on the arm of my jacket this afternoon. My hand went up to brush it away, and then it stopped. Routine interrupted.

There it was. Although several weeks before, my beloved red dog had peacefully passed away. My closest companion of 12 years had once shed — generously and unadulteratedly — across the things of my life. And while she was gone, here: her trademark doghair still stood.

How lucky I had been for the red hair. How lucky I had been for the loyalty two companion animals provide: commingled, intertwined, co-habitated. Shedding upon one another our lives such that when we went back into the world, we had these small red badges of courage.

In our dozen years together, this animal taught me more about being a person than any person I’ve known. Importantly:

1.Learn at least one impressive trick.
2.Shake when wet.
3.Wag.
4.When off the leash, it is best to run to a loved one.
5.Accept treats from strangers energetically yet cautiously.
6.Roll in grass whenever possible.
7.Wonderful things can sometimes be found in the trash.
8.Barking is a last resort.
9.Know when the right time is to let go of what you love.
10.True life partners do exist.

Lucy passed away November 15, 2012. The loss devastated me so deeply and personally that I couldn’t speak of it at all. Now, I think back on what I have been known to say, “When in doubt, trust the one covered in dog hair.” Trust them, and know they’re carrying badges of much more.

How lucky we are if we have known dog hair.

Our Weekend

Well, I was going to share my weekend with you yesterday, but after my day in the cupboard, I just couldn’t.

It was my date night this weekend and I took Mr. Michie to the movies! It was so much FUN! I can’t tell you the last time we went to a movie in the evening, we are usually afternoon movie goers.

We saw OZ. We both really enjoyed it, I thought they did a nice tie in of the elements, the costumes were beautiful and I only wish she was real because the little girl the “wizard” helps save in China Town, I could just take home with me, she was so cute!

We grabbed some breakfast before going grocery shopping on Saturday morning:

Then I spent the rest of Saturday preparing Sunday’s lunch. I made my Nana’s macaroni salad, my dad’s green bean salad and homemade yeast rolls.

On Sunday we baked a ham and I tried a new peach cobbler recipe. It was delicious! I made a few changes, by adding some cinnamon and a little bit if lemon zest to the peaches, like I would do if I was making a pie.

I have been reading a series of books at the moment that take place in the South (The Caster Chronicles) and after reading what Amma has been cooking, I was hankering after a little Southern Home-style dinner myself. There was even sweet tea to boot!

Monday, Monday

Well, I was going to share my weekend with you today. But, this Monday has just about killed me. Upon arriving to work this morning and entering the cupboard, I noticed a terribly fishy smell. Literally a fishy smell as there were fish in the fridge in my room that had been brought in to use for life drawing on Friday.

Over the weekend their lovely fish juices began to flow and that coupled with the bit of ice that was still in their bags dripped onto the fridge motor and burned it out, which tripped the fuse in my room, shut the fridge down along with everything else.

So flash forward to today and there has been fish juices and yucky water dripping onto the floor all weekend and not just to any floor, but a heated floor. I could have caught JAWS with the smell of that stuff.

So, on went the gloves, out went the fridge and hot water and bleach went everywhere. I have scrubbed, wiped, sprayed and the smell is still lingering. I even put the fan on high, just to get air moving, as there are no windows in the cupboard.

We all walked around today with our noses scrinched. So, I shall save what I was going to share with you and instead show you the photographs of the fish I took on Friday, as we were documenting them to use for future classes.

As Anne of Green Gables says, “Tomorrow is a new day, with no mistakes in it yet!”, so I’m hoping for a better tomorrow then today has been!

What A Week!

A few late nights at school, a couple of meetings, one cute furry visitor to the cupboard, one sick husband, one terrible migraine (that I still can’t quite kick), cooking, baking, cleaning, staying on top of mount laundry, a crazy, busy, run around kinda week and we have finally made it!

The weekend is here! Long may it last!

Paring Down

I’ve been doing some major “Spring Cleaning” in the cottage, with still more do. We are normally very good about recycling, reusing and donating things to the charity shop, but this year we have truly taken a more minimalistic approach to heart and are trying to get rid of the things we don’t really need. Paring down in order to be better organised and our home a more relaxing environment in that it will be a little more devoid of clutter, but still cozy.

I am also taking this idea into my blog. I have a few things I have been working on behind the scenes with a lot of help at times of Mr. Michie, if I couldn’t quite get a css code right. I am going to be paring down, streamlining and doing a little de-cluttering.

Stick with me, there are some BIG changes to come and I will be telling you more as I get closer to unveiling my plans.
