The Spell Is Broken

As if the world has been holding its breath, the clocks began again, the spell is broken and another school year comes rushing at us. I’m never ready, but this year in particular, I’m finding it harder.

The house has had a nice rhythm. All the work has gotten done, all the meetings have been had, scrabble has been endlessly played in the backgrounds and afternoon breaks with bowls of yoghurt topped with heaps of fresh summer berries and homemade peanut butter granola have been feasted on with the windows open wide and the breeze blowing the curtains.

We’ve celebrated holidays, anniversaries and birthdays over this time period. We’ve lingered over our cups of coffee and our daily crossword puzzle in the morning, while music transported us somewhere else. There has been a steadiness in the haze that has been happening all around us. We’ve known for a long time what we wanted and the Covid lockdown has only clarified that even further.

We enter this new school year with an even deeper dedication of making more of our dreams written on paper come to life.

HELLO, August!

Hello, August! We’re ready for more early morning swims in the ocean when the world is quiet and belongs just to us. We’re ready for more hiking and picnics in the meadows and music and dancing.

We’re ready for bowls of ripe cherries and feasting on fresh strawberries and blackberries, still warm from the sun. We’re ready for ice cream sandwiches for lunch and eating popcorn and watching old movies on the couch. We’re ready for sunset walks and cheeseburgers with heirloom tomatoes and corn on the cob for dinner.

We’re ready to stay up late playing games of Scrabble and working on jigsaw puzzles. We’re ready to continue to celebrate summer and all that it holds.

HELLO, July!

Well, hello July! We’re ready for school to finish for the summer this month and to have a chance to catch our breath. We’re ready to keep our 70s music groove rolling as we dance in the kitchen with evening closing in. We’re ready for more sunny days and early morning walks when the rest of the world is still sleeping.

We’re ready for afternoons spent on the couch with the windows open wide, letting the ocean breeze drift in and a good book in hand. We’re ready for more dinners by candlelight, setting up the projector to watch old movies and have our annual Christmas in July party. We’re ready for chances to go hiking nearby and cooling off in the water on hot summer days.

We’re ready to feast on ham sandwiches with heirloom tomatoes on homemade bread for lunch time with glasses of sweet tea by our side. We’re ready for ice cream for dinner and the taste of salt air on our lips. We’re ready for summer and the freedom it promises to bring.

Call of the Wild

This morning I was lost in a crazy dream. It was a hodgepodge of characters that included the White Walkers from Game of Thrones and the Ring Wraiths from Lord of The Rings. Lord only knows how I ended up in this nutsy little dream of mine? I heard screaming in this far off Neverland and looked around me. I spun in a circle thinking it was the noise the Ring Wraiths make; then I thought it was a child screaming for help. The scream faded and I opened my eyes and stared up at the ceiling. The glow from the humidifier bathed the ceiling in a golden pinkish hue. I rolled my head to stare at the clock, it was 3:27am.

I must have just been dreaming I thought, but then I heard it again. This eerie cry in a perfectly hushed world. I was now fully awake and I knew exactly what that noise was. I crept out of bed and over to the window and I slowly pulled up the blind and started scanning the street below for him. He wasn’t there. I turned my head from left to right, I pressed my forehead to the glass peering straight down. I couldn’t see him. With the next call, I realised he was just down the street.

It took everything in me, not to run outside in my nightgown to see where he was. I’ve been looking for him all summer. I’ve been worried about him. But last night I knew he was well. My fox was back.
