I’ve Got My:

I’ve got my wellies on today, because it hasn’t stopped raining since about 4 this morning, when I was up watching it pour down.

It is nice though, to just have everything get refreshed, cool down a little and take a breather.

Tattly

I toy at times with the idea of getting a tattoo. I know what I would have done and where I would put it. I would definitely get something with color, it would be small and it would have a vintage feel.
There are people I know, who have tattoos that I admire. Some people’s tattoos are truly a piece of art.

However, the truth is, I am not brave enough to get one, the thought of the needles are just too much for me. But, this is an idea I like:

something that is sweet and would eventually wear off, something that would more importantly, go on painlessly. Seeing these popsicles, made me re-think the tattoo I thought I wanted, maybe I would get one of these little retro frozen treats instead for real, if I ever got up the nerve.

Writing on the Wall #22

Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can.  ~Danny Kaye

Today I share my “Writing on the Wall” piece with a heavy heart. Jennie’s Kitchen, by Jennifer Perillo, is a blog that I read on a regular basis and this week when I saw her “Last Dance” post, I thought what an odd title. I watched the video of a father sweetly twirling his daughter around like a princess and thought maybe the title refers to the song they were listening to.

Sadly, it was more prophetic than that, it was Jennie letting us know, that that was Mikey’s last dance. Her husband unexpectedly past away this past weekend and I mourn for a woman and a family that I don’t personally know, yet I feel I know her through her blog.

Jennie, you are in my thoughts and prayers as you find the strength to continue on for yourself and for your family. Let this be a lesson to us all, life is so sweet, so precious, don’t let it slip through your fingers, hold close to what is dear, and remember to say “I Love You”, because you might not get that chance again.

Greetings From the Road

greetings-from-pittsburgh-pennsylvaniaI have been doing a little travelling on my own at the moment. One of the places I ended up going to, is a personal favourite of mine: Pittsburgh, PA.

Soergel FarmsI checked in on some family I have there, went to Soergel’s Farm one of my most cherished places to go and see. I am a farm girl myself and I feel it is truly important to support your local farmers. Eat with each harvest and taste the best of the season. I drank some apple cider, picked up a pie from their bakery counter and had my picture taken on the wheel of an old Amish buggy.

GiGi WagonWheelIt was pretty hot while I was there visiting and one night after dinner we headed out for a drive and ended up going to Dairy Queen. There is nothing better than a Dairy Queen dipped cone. I prefer getting mine in a cup, that way you get more “dip”. I decided to get the cherry flavour, it matched my apron and is one of my favourites! It was delicious and definitely cooled me down.

GiGi at the Dairy QueenI also had the chance to do a little antiquing. I went to a store that I had been dying to visit and boy, did I have fun! I must have spent 3 hours in there wandering around. I came back with a few surprises, one in particular! I think she will fit right in to our little home. I will be introducing you soon, but at the moment, she is getting over her jet lag…

Guilty Pleasures

Summer is a time to indulge in guilty pleasures. Be it eating dessert every day while on vacation, or going back for that second helping even though you wouldn’t normally, or sleeping in till noon…

Last Summer in the heat wave, when we could barely bring ourselves to get off the couch to get more ice water/sweet tea we started discussing old movies we watched when we were little. Some of these movies were true guilty pleasure movies, because they are so bad they are good!

There always seemed to be a slew of B-movies on, when I came home late at night from babysitting in the Summer and no matter how bad they were, I just couldn’t look away, I would watch them as I unwound from the night. Mr. Michie, an ocean away would also stay up late to watch “bad” movies when he was growing up. We kicked some titles back and forth and decided to get a few and watch them to share our teenager memories with each other.

Mr. Michie decided we should make a tradition of this and got the ball rolling this week by showing me: Fright Night. Now, this is a big thing for me, when he suggested this, as I don’t watch horror movies, I can take the old cheesey scary movies, but I don’t watch real horror, it just doesn’t do it for me. Lucky for me this was just a cheesey scary movie!

We sat in the dark, eating popcorn and watching this movie. The 80’s music was just to die for. It was too good. Chris Sarandon as a vampire? I couldn’t stop laughing when I first saw it, how could Prince Humperdinck be a vampire?

In looking the movie up we discovered that it had been remade and was coming out this fall. That seems to be a running theme for us, in that after I showed Mr. Michie the original Piranha film last year, we found out they were remaking it, of course we went, 3D glasses and all and had a whale (or should I say Piranha) of a time!

Mr. Michie also showed me Highlander last Summer. I don’t know how I could have missed out on this one? Scotsmen, Queen singing the theme music, Sean Connery! There can be only ONE! What is there not to like?

I thought that I would compile a list of some of our guilty pleasure movies (some aren’t guilty pleasures at all, in the sense that they aren’t bad, they are just movies that one of us was shocked to hear the other hadn’t seen). What are your memorable movies, the ones you love because they are so bad that they are good? Here is some of ours:

1. Critters
2. Piranha
3. The Monster Squad
4. Fright Night
5. Tremors
6. Mr. Boogedy (an old disney favorite of mine, though it used to scare my sister and I to death!)
7. The Canterville Ghost (the good one, with John Gielgud)
8. Return to Oz
9. The Last Starfighter
10. Highlander
